The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockford–based Resurrection Parish has jurisdiction over much of Romeoville. The first settler in Romeoville was Nicholas Romer who came to the area in 1824 from New York City. He built a cabin on a creek near present-day Romanville and named it Romerstown after himself and his father-in-law, Nicholas Dolan. A post office was established at Romeoville in 1830, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1836, Julius Caesar Romer purchased land east of present day Romeoville from John Pecora for $5 per acre ($100 total). He name his new settlement Romeocutta after his father-in-law’s birthplace (Romerstown) in Northern Italy. The first church service took place there on July 20, 1836 by Revd John Wigglesworth with assistance from Revd Daniel O’Connell of Mount Carmel Church on the same site as today’s Our Lady Of Fatima Shrine (now simply called “Church”). Julius Caesar Romer also donated 125 acres (40 hectares) of land north of town to be used for agricultural purposes and founded what would become known as "Romeoville Township". In 1846 during the American Civil War Abraham Lincoln visited Romeoville while campaigning for reelection as President; he dined with local farmers at Mr Fenton's house before traveling tooon back home across the state line to Springfield where he delivered a speech denouncing slavery which later became an integral part of America's history narrative A hotel/motel opened up around this time called "The Hotel Gabriel" which still stands today just off High Street within walking distance of most residents homes including businesses like antique stores and grocery stores . This early infrastructure helped make Italians popular among many Americans because they could provide jobs that were often difficult or impossible for other citizens to do without leaving their homes . However , due economic conditions starting around World War II changed all that when many Italian families left town en masse due to political instability and increasing competition from other industries such as agriculture . At one point there were only about 10 active Italian businesses left out of a population over 3000 people
