In recent years, however, it has experienced some difficult times; this is most notably visible in terms of traffic congestion caused by its location on Chicago's north side.

Romeoville was a small community in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1854 by John Romeoville and his wife Nancy. The community name is derived from the Roman family that originally settled in what is now Sangamon County. John Romeoville was a native of Rome, Italy who had come to America as a refugee during the American Civil War. He established himself in Sangamon County and began to trade goods with the local Indians. In 1854, he built a log cabin on the banks of the Kankakee River, about two miles west of present-day Romeoville. The Romeovilles were pioneers in many ways and are credited with starting the first school in Sangamon County and helping to build churches and other public buildings there. The town rapidly grew and soon became an important center for trade and commerce within Sangamon County. In 1865, John Romeoville donated land to establish Roman Catholic Church which remains one of Sangamon County's most significant landmarks today. The town also experienced growth in its social life; at times it boasted as many as 20 residents living together on oneacre plots of land! In 1907, John Romeoville passed away at age 93 years old; his widow continued to live here until her death in 1951. She is buried next to her husband at the churchyard plot where they both rest today. Over time, much has been done to commemorate John Romeoville's life and legacy - including construction of roads around the village (including US-41), addition of a primary school, development of tourism initiatives such as historical interpreters operating daily tours throughout village history sectors (including Memorial Park), establishment of several museums throughout village existence (including Roman Catholic Museum), dedication of three national historic landmark sites within walking distance (Memorial Park Cemetery & Cultural Center Site - home to Illinois State Capitol building & Nauvoo House - both once owned by Chicago mayor Richard Mudgett) etcetera etcetera...
