The Rockford Arsenal, also known as the Rockford Armory, was a military installation in Rockford, Illinois. It served as the main armory for the United States Army from 1871 to 1919 and again from 1945 to 1949. The arsenal was first built in 1871 by Colonel George Armstrong Custer and Major James Fenton on land donated by Samuel H. Griggs. It became operational on October 15, 1871. In 1889 it was renamed Fort Sheridan after General John A. Sigel's headquarters during the American Civil War. The fort operated as an artillery depot until World War I when it became a training ground for infantry troops and engineers. After World War I it functioned as an ammunition depot until it closed in 1919 due to budgetary problems. The arsenal reopened in 1945 as the Rockford Armory Center with a new facility designed by architect George Wirths which is still used today. The center served different purposes from 1951-1959 before becoming the Arsenal Museum which opened in 1959. Since then, there have been several renovations including renovation of the museum's permanent collection in 2007-2008 which increased its size by more than 20% to over 350 items including weapons systems dating back to 1650 AD;

Rockford is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, located on the banks of the Rock River. The population was 97,763 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Rockford is one of five cities in Illinois with a metropolitan area population over 100,000 (the other four are Chicago, Springfield, Evanston and Champaign-Urbana). The metropolitan area includes all of Cook County and parts of Kane and McHenry Counties as well as parts of Will and DeKalb Counties in Indiana. The first people to live here were the Potawatomi Indians who lived around what is now downtown Rockford from about 1800 to 1834. They abandoned their village when white settlers arrived in large numbers from Illinois around 1810-1811. Some early settlers were James Dixon and his family who settled near present day North Avenue in 1824; John Trimble who settled on what is now Northwestern Highway in 1830; Elijah White who arrived in 1830 or 1831 along with another group of Irish immigrants called the Fords; George Stephenson bought land east of present day Wilson Street for $1 per acre from Nicholas Cary in 1836; David Whitcomb started a blacksmith shop on State Street in 1840; Isaac Goodyear built a gristmill west of Academy Road (now University Boulevard) just north ofpresent-day Southgate Mall in1846; Samuel Morse built his adulthood home on Main Street southwestofpresent-day Elmira Road Northeastin1848/49; Amos Kendall founded Kendall's Insurance Company hereinabout 1850/51 although he had been living elsewhere since about 1840/41 when he moved from Philadelphia to become Rockford’s first insurance commissioner In 1865, General Andrew Johnson ordered General William Tecumseh Sherman to march through Illinois leading his army’s Union Forces intoIndianatodestroythe Confederate government’s military supplies and installations there. Sherman destroyed mostofRockford’s buildings but did not enter town because its high bridge would have posed a major obstacle for marching troops . In 1870, Ottawa Creamery opened its doors here after being founded by Canadian citizensEugene CzarneckiandJohn Macdonald ; it became one of America’s largest creameries until it closed its doorsin1986 . In 1893, Rockford Electric Light & Power Corporation was organized followed by incorporationofRockfords Telephone Company soon afterwards During World War II American soldiers garrisoned at Fort Sheridan landed here beginning May 9th 1942 until they surrendered December 7th 1945 after which time returnees left for Kansas City The American Automotive Manufacturing Company plant operated out side this town during this time Rockford was officially incorporated as an urban township on April 24th 1947 following approval by the Illinois General Assembly . On November 3rd 1959 Mayor Edwina Giannini announced that she would run for re-election against incumbent Democrat Edward Jelinowski but lost by only 6% within two months . A new city charter was adopted which provided for: 1) unified governing body consisting OF both an elected mayor AND city council members OR 2) single authority governing all departments including police & fire services WITH no mayoral or council involvement whatsoever ! This approach worked very well during my tenure as Mayor & I am very proud to have been able to enact many important initiatives such as making rockfords first “smart grid” LED streetlights available to residents free Of Charge starting January 1st 2019 !!
