Rockford, Illinois is the birthplace of optical accessories. In 1885, two men- Milton Sills and Franklin P. Fuller- patented a new type of eyeglasses that became known as "Sills and Fuller." These glasses were designed to protect against glare and reflections from other objects in a person's environment. The glasses were popularized by mechanical genius Franklin P. Fuller, who developed the first successful pair of sunglasses in 1895. In 1907, Rockford’s first optical store was opened on Main Street by Niles Wirtz. At this time, Rockford was one of the most prosperous communities in Illinois because it had become an important manufacturing center for automobiles and other industrial products. This business was later sold to Eversharp Corporation and continued operations until it closed its doors in 1965. The success of these early Optical stores led to a proliferation of optical shops throughout Illinois, which continues to this day! Today, there are more than 350 optical shops operating throughout the state!

Rockford is a city in the Illinois state of Illinois, United States. The population was 97,643 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest city in Chicago metropolitan area. Rockford is also one of two cities in IL that are both over 100,000 people (the other being Peoria). The first settlement in what is now Rockford was made by a group of soldiers from Fort Dearborn on August 15, 1813. The town was named for General Jonathan Edwards who served as military governor of Upper Canada during the War of 1812. It became part of the United States when it did not secede from America following the American Civil War. In 1893, Italian immigrants founded a small village near downtown called Arbor Crest which later became known as "Parma".
