George Washington was elected as its first president and his cabinet included three men from Illinois- James K. Polk, Franklin D. Roosevelt and William Howard Taft- which led to settlement of what would become Rockford by Americans in 1836. On December 12, 1836, while still under government jurisdiction as a part of Champaign County (now Urbana), Rockford became one of twelve townships within McLean Township on February 3, 1837 when that township was organized into two separate jurisdictions: one for voting citizens and another for military service members known as “military districts” or “territories” since they were not subject to civil law or taxation like civilians were (the other eleven townships were Urbana Township; Bloomington Township; Decatur Township; East Market Township; Griggsboro Township; Hollandale Township; Johnstown Borough; Lebanonburgh Borough; Northfield Village ; Oak Park Heights ; Peru City ; Summit City) . These military districts formed what would become known as sectionalism within American politics with Representatives David Davis (from Bloomington) and Abraham Lincoln (fromDecatur) pushing for statehood for these territories while their compatriots in Chicago pushed for national recognition and annexation of these areas into their city limits In 1861 Rockford became the seat of government for all McLean County when it was created from parts of Hoffman Estates and Aurora municipalities following a referendum by voters there over whether or not to secede from Illinois due to increasing Union forces presence throughout the county During World War I – also called World War I– Rockford played an important role in both sides with its heavy manufacturing sector contributing significantly to both munitions production and troop mobilization After World War II, rockfords growth slowed down markedly due largely to successive waves of migration out of the Great Lakes region including many blue collar workers seeking jobs in factories eastward during those years Of note however several high profile businesses such as Ford Motor Company moved plants here during this time including Dearborn Truck Line which built its first truck line here back before it opened up production at Parysville OH Rockfords economy has grown relatively recently thanks largely to large contributions from labor unions making it one of Midwest leaders in corporate welfare programs dating back more than sixty years
