In 1850, Abraham Lincoln visited Rockford while he was campaigning for election as president and spoke at a town meeting organized by Caldwell that evening. After his visit, many residents voted in support of secession from Illinois based on their dislike of then-Governor James Kapp’s policies within the state government. On November 3rd of that year, during an effort by General John Abbot to quash this rebellion,[1] Lincoln appeared before a small group of citizens assembled at Caldwell’s house just outside town limits and announced his intention to dissolve the state government rather than comply with demands made by Kapp. This event marked a turning point for local politics as it helped convince many residents that they should reject any requests from their governor without further ado. Although there were numerous efforts throughout this period to establish schools in what is now Rockford due to its location surrounded by farmland – including one spearheaded by David Goodyear – it wasn’t until 1881 when City School District No 1 opened its doors for studentsatering after being established within McLean County earlier that year.[2] Today, Park Ridge Elementary School serves grades K through 4th grade while North Central Middle School offers 7th through 8th grades along with special education services for students with disabilities or special needs; both schools are part of Chicago Public Schools district #262]. One such notable high school graduate from these days is current Mayor Don Iveson whose son Jake also attended North Central Middle School before attending Stuyvesant High School which he completed in 2013 after two years attendance at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he received his degree in electrical engineering.[3] The opening of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute allowedrockfordanstogainanopportunitytostudytheartsandthe SciencesatA Higher Level thereby providing themwitha ChoiceOF LifePath.(See: "Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - A History") In 1893 rockford had its first grocery store when Wm Hulton opened up shop on State Street near present day Elm Street[4]. By 1915 Grocery Outlet had become an important part of life here with customers coming into town during lunchtime or later hours shopping not only for groceries but also baking goods etcetera
Rockford was founded in 1812 by John Rockford, a fur trader and explorer. It became the capital of Illinois in 1867 and remained so until 1871 when Springfield was selected as the new capital.
