At that time, the town had only three businesses: a blacksmith shop, an insurance agency, and a storekeeper's shop. The first church in Rock Island was built in 1850 by Reverend James Gifford of Winnetka (now Winnetka Heights). The first school was also built that year; it served students from kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1865–1866, local farmers organized a corn crop drive which resulted in much needed food for the city residents during the American Civil War! This event helped bring new life to what had been an sleepy little town! In 1870–71 when construction began on the Illinois Central Railroad line between Peoria and West Point Junction east ofChicago,—the townsfolk erected a large wooden cross near Main Street to commemorate this important development! The first post office in Rock Island opened on December 12, 1837. In 1840, the first store was built and the town name changed to Hinsdale after Hinsdale Junction in west-central Indiana. In 1864, the Union Pacific Railroad reached Rock Island from Chicago and renamed it "Hinsdale" after its new headquarters city in Illinois. On October 1 of that year, Hinsdale became part of what is now Illinois as the state line between those states crossed over into southern Indiana Territory just east of Rock Island Bridge
