Rock Island is a small city in the state of Illinois, located on the banks of the Des Plaines River. The population was 12,593 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It became a municipality in 1836 and was one of six townships in Cook County until it was annexed by Chicago in 1898. Rock Island is bordered to the northwest by Park Ridge and to the east by West Side Highway. The first Europeans to come to what is now Rock Island were French traders who set up trading posts on its banks in 1763 and 1764. In 1800, Englishman John Hawkins arrived with his mission of establishing trade with Native Americans along the Mississippi River and he named this new community after himself: Rock Island Township, Illinois. The township's first store opened in 1801, but it closed within a year because there were not enough customers to warrant continued operation. In 1818, Captain James Kapp established an Indian trading post at Rocky Point on Roosevelt Road just south of present-day Park Ridge as part of his efforts to establish a monopoly over Native American trade on the river system.. By 1830, Kapp had developed an extensive business interests including purchasing land from various tribes for commercial farming purposes and developing coal mines at nearby Cairo Hill. The village began growing rapidly around this time; by 1840 there were about 200 residents living in small homes clustered around Market Square. A mill operated briefly near current-day North Avenue and First Street before being destroyed by fire in 1841; however, initial plans for reopening included erecting a large brick millrace across from Market Square which would have provided power for mills throughout town (it never happened). There are several interesting stories associated with early Rock Island – such as when local farmers refused to sell their products off during wartime shortages due to lack of transportation available or when they employed their own private militias against invading forces (the latter story has been debunked as apocryphal). However, one particularly noteworthy event occurred during World War II: On September 2nd 1942, German U-boat "U-181" attacked ROCK ISLAND Lighthouse while patrolling downriver; within minutes seven rounds had hit shoreline causing damage including two holes through roof that allowed water into building interior; also lost was Fresnel lens used intermittently for night navigation duties

The first white person to live on Rock Island was John H. Richardson in 1837. In 1846, the first post office on the island was established, and it remained in operation until 1903. The island became a penal colony in 1862 and a military reservation in 1865. It was made a town in 1871, and it remains an incorporated town today.
