By 1890, over 50% of all employment within Rock Island took place within its borders thanks to its thriving economy based upon manufacturing (coalmining), commerce (the railroad system), agriculture (livestock) and services (hospitals). During World War II, Stout Air Force Base was located on the south side of town near present day North Side Airport off I-){}rd St.. The first people to live on the Rock Island Peninsula were the Potawatomi. The area was known as Prairie Dog Town because of the abundance of potawatomi chickens that roamed the area. In 1795, a group of British traders founded a trading post on Belle Glade island in Lake Michigan and began trading with the Potawatomi. In 1812, General James K. Polk led an army against Native American forces at Battle of Hennepin River, which helped end years of conflict between white settlers and Native Americans on Rock Island. After this victory, white settlers began developing land around Belle Glade island and developed what is now downtown Chicago. Rock Island became part of Illinois in 1818 when it was added to Congress's 1st statehood bill. As a result, it became one of the first states to ratify the United States Constitution. The county seat for Rock Island County was moved from Prairie Dog Town to Chicago in 1836 during its incorporation into Illinois. During World War II, Rock Island played an important role in helping make military supplies available to America's war effort by transporting goods and personnel across Lake Michigan
