A few people became merchants or political leaders but most operated as small farmers or craftsmen. In 1836, citizens of Rock Island decided to establish their own post office because they felt that Springfield's post office did not meet their needs for services ( such as mail delivery). They named their new town after General David Dixon (1771-1848) who had beencommandant general during the War of 1812 and had played an important role in creating modern Ulysses S Grant's army. The first Post Office building was constructed on what is now First Street between Jackson Avenue and State Street east of downtownChicago within two years of its opening!
