Rock Island holster history began in 1854 when a group of men from Illinois organized the Rock Island Gun Club. The club was modeled after the Rifle and Pistol Club in Boston, Massachusetts and it became an important institution on the South Side of Chicago. The first holster worn by members of the Rock Island Gun Club was called a "Belt Holster." Belt holsters were designed to protect firearms against dust and dirt accumulation. They also allowed for quick removal of firearms from clothing. One of the most common belt holsters during this time period was the "Gatling" belt holster. This holster featured two straps that connected to each other at one end and served as a belt loop. The gun would be placed around the shooter's waist and then clips onto this harness, protecting it from accidental removal or damage. The county was created from parts of Cook County on April 1, 1830. On January 1, 1861, Rock Island County became a part of Illinois.
