Rock Island is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rock Island County and home to the Rock Island Arsenal and former home of the Chicago White Sox. The first white settlers in what is now Rock Island Township were George Washington and his family who founded a log cabin on an island in Fox Creek on November 3, 1787. The first post office was established in 1814 but only served as a stop along the road from Peoria to Decatur. In 1836, James Kephart donated land to be used as a township by members of the Illinois General Assembly. On December 12, 1836, it was organized as part of that assembly's effort to create new counties in central Illinois following the end of the Mexican–American War. In 1838, John Henniker became township supervisor and developed what is now downtown Rock Island into its present form with several blocks of land reserved for public use. In 1839-1840, construction began on what would become Chicago's first courthouse—the First National Bank Building (now One Michigan Plaza). The same year saw construction begin on Chicago's first hospital,opathic general hospital (now Advocate HealthCare). That building still stands today adjacent to City Hall Park across from Millennium Park/Admiral Kidd Pier (just south of State Street). Rock Island became an incorporated village in 1854 when all of Cook County was created and it had no representation in either House of Delegates or the state legislature until 1957 when it became one of two townships within Cook County proper (the other being Elmhurst).[1] As part of this process villages were dissolved and their residents annexed into larger municipalities while smaller villages continued to exist within their respective jurisdictions until they too were absorbed into larger municipalities during annexation processes which then often resulted in consolidation between these larger municipalities leading to increased joblessness rates for those rural residents newly transplanted onto city shores unable or unwilling to find work elsewhere due primarilyto high cost premiums associated with living outside metropolitan areas without employer-sponsored healthcare benefits available like those enjoyed by those living inside metropolitan areas where such benefits are generally available for free through government programs like Medicare/Medicaid which covers most Americans regardless Of income levels.] Accordingly according To Municipal Consolidation Laws Of Illinois § 5-101 "all civil parish establishments having less than five hundred fifty fulltime equivalents...shall be annexed with such municipality as may have been formed out thereof." This led to almost simultaneous annexations by both Elmhurst and Rock Island resulting in over 100% joblessness rates among some rural residents newly transplanted onto city shores since these annexed communities lacked any real economic opportunity apart from jobs related activities typically substituted for traditional agricultural pursuits once small businesses had closed downmaintenance costs associated with maintaining these large municipal populations) prioritizing joblessness above all else rather than providing basic needs necessary for life including housing development has led many people who lived off these municipally funded services & industries (& local taxpayers) becoming chronic homeless & exorbitantly expensively marginalized[/1][2][3][4]

Rock Island is a small city in the southwestern corner of Illinois, United States. The population was 9,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1834 by General Israel Ortega and Campana as a stop on their way to Surveyor General John L. Noriego's campaign against Native American tribes in what is now Wisconsin. In 1836, Rock Island became the first town in Cook County when it was annexed from Plainfield Township. The first inhabitants of Rock Island were French Canadians who arrived there in 1775 during the French and Indian War to take up land that had been abandoned by the British after they had withdraw from Canada. They called themselves "Troupes de la Rivière" (units of the river). After long years of effort, they finally built Fort Dearborn on what is now State Road 7 near where it meets Lake Michigan. From here, they began construction of a stockade and other defenses against Native Americans who had established camps along both banks of the river. In 1834, General Israel Ortega and Campana founded Rock Island as a stop on their way to Surveyor General John L. Noriego's campaign against Native American tribes in what is now Wisconsin; this event helped make Rock Island one of America's earliest settlements (it would be surpassed only by Boston) In 1836, Rock Island became the first town in Cook County when it was annexed from Plainfield Township
