Rock Island is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 82,191 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago. The city is named for General David Rock and his victory over the Black Hawk War of 1818. Rock Island was organized on February 12, 1851 as a part of the new state of Illinois. In 1857 it became a county seat and in 1865 it became an incorporated town. On November 3, 1912 Rock Island voters passed a proposition to rename the city "Davidson". Incorrectly spelled Davidsonville had been its previous name. In 1967 Rock Island voters passed a proposal to change its name to "Davidson" again after then-Mayor James Davidson died suddenly while on vacation in Mexico City; however this proposal did not receive enough votes to become effective until 1969 when Mayor Robert Jastrzeba approved it with an amendment that said "Davidson" only if residents raised $1 million per year for local development projects (the first such initiative ever put forward by either political party). In 1974 Jastrzeba approved another amendment which changed the name back to "Rock Island". The current mayor is Bob Dailey and the City Council has 6 members: 5 Democrats and 1 Republican (3 at-large seats). As of January 1, 2019 there are no plans for any major growth in downtown or other areas since Mayor Dailey's term expired in 2018 and no new councilmember has been appointed since then - leaving much of downtown undeveloped and abandoned except for some small businesses currently occupying space vacated by defunct garment companies long ago. There have also been repeated attempts by developers to build large office towers adjacent to downtown but these have all failed due primarily to lack of approval from City Hall despite promises from Mayor Dailey himself that he would make significant changes regarding growth within Downtown Rock Island once he took office again later this year

Rock Island is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,813 at the 2010 census. Rock Island is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of the most diverse towns in Illinois. The town was established on May 12, 1847, by General John P. Dorsey and his troops from the 1st Regiment of volunteers under the command of Colonel Augustus A. Fitch from Decatur County. The first settler on land that would become Rock Island was James Cushing who built a cabin on what is now west first Street. By 1850 there were 10 buildings and 100 people in Rock Island. In 1851 Captain Samuel Jourdan arrived with 6 Marines and took possession of what would soon become known as "New Rock Island". He named it after Major Pierre-Jacques Demers who had been commanding an French brigade during the American Revolution along with two other general officers - Jean Baptiste Savoy de la Harpe and Nicolas Brouwer - also from Decatur County. On December 15, 1852, Josephine Dodge founded her own schoolhouse which became one of the first schools in Rock Island Township when it was organized on February 14th, 1853. On October 9th 1861 David Ladd sold 7 acres (27 ha) to George Wirth for $4 per acre ($ ). When he died in 1865 his wife married Wirth's nephew John Hinkleman who then donated 5 acres (18 ha) to create what would later be called East Drive/Hinkleman Place/Ladd Roadstead Park which still exists today as part of downtown Rock Island. At this time there were only 2 buildings left in town but within months new settlers had arrived including Isaac Newton Phelps who purchased 8 acres (30 ha) just east of present day First Street for $10 per acre ($ ). Phelps named his new community "New Rocks" after himself and moved his family to live there permanently in 1865 when he leased 4 more acres (12 ha). In 1870rock island had a population of 350 residents with 30 businesses; by 1880 it had grown to 500 residents with 60 businesses; by 1890 it had increased to 1,000 residents with 120 businesses; by 2000 it had reached 3,000 residents with 300 businesses providing nearly all local services including public education aided through private schools run by religious organizations such as Lutheranism or Roman Catholicism while also hosting conventionsuventsand other events at various locations throughout its years Of growth many small shops closed down due mainly to competition from larger stores opening up near them causing layoffs for some employees resulting in social unrest that eventually led to violence
