Rock Island is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of McLean County. The population was 139,821 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th largest city in Illinois and the second most populous city in McLean County after Chicago. Rock Island is one of seven UI townships located within Kane County, Indiana. The town was founded in 1847 by settlers from Vermont who followed a forced migration westward during the American Civil War to escape slavery. The first post office for Rock Island opened on December 2, 1847, under the name "Hamelton." In 1865, Rock Island became part of the new state of Illinois when it was split off from Michigan Territory. The original core business district around City Hall Square had been one of manufacturing; however much newer neighborhoods have arisen since then including Park Ridge, which is now considered an affluent suburb of Chicago; Libertyville; and Wheaton (now Glenview), all adjacent to downtown Rock Island. In 1894-1895, local businessmen organized what became known as "the White Rose Rally" against railroad consolidation with other northern cities like Minneapolis and Milwaukee into a single company—the Northern Pacific Railroad Company—which would have undercut their prices and diminished their share of market share. Led by Mayor John Jaffa (1902-2004), people rallied not only outside City Hall but also inside as well as across Dundee Street Bridge into nearby Aurora Heights where they burned many Northern Pacific Railroad locomotives that had appeared overnight on this stretch of rural Indiana soil near Carbondale junction with I-65 traffic patterns.] On January 6th 1895 Mayor Jaffa ordered 10 soldiers mounted on horseback to storm City Hall and remove objectionable objects before inauguration ceremonies were slated to begin that day instead due to fears or riots ensuing should these items be removed or not? fortunately no violence ensued but public outcry resulted in passage two years later through both houses Of State Legislature establishing Rahway Township adjoining Carbondale Junction along I-65/UIC Rte #5 rather than another municipally run township! This event signaled commencement Deep South Side suburban immigration started!! This trend continued unabated until Jim Crow laws were repealed following World War II Rock Island enjoyed steady growth throughout its early years despite competition from larger cities such as Chicago and Detroit which saw rapid growth during this time period too – some 20% over just ten years! By 1900 Rock Island’s population reached 507 residents while its annexations included West Des Moines (1899), Elmhurst (1901), Union Grove (1903)and Deerfield Beach (1905). The history of the gun swivel is a long and complicated one. It has origins that can be traced back to 1837, when a military officer in the United States named Samuel Colt developed a new type of revolver that could be rotated so that the rounds could be aimed at different targets. The early guns used barrels that were attached directly to the frame of the gun, which created problems with accuracy. Colt solved this problem by designing a revolving barrel that allowed the round to rotate freely. Once locked in place, it can no longer be rotated without manually removing it from its perch.

However, when they arrived at the plantation, they found that all of the slaves had been freed and were living as equals with their former owners. This event is often considered one of the most important moments in Rock Island's history.
