Rock Island is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,958 at the 2010 census. Rock Island is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies on the east side of the Chicago River and is bordered by Racine to the south, Waukegan to the north, and Skokie to the west. The first Europeans to visit Rock Island were French explorers in 1760 who named it "Ile Royale". In 1812, Congress authorized Executive Order No. 990 which established Fort Dearborn as a U.S. military post on what is now Rock Island. The fort served as an arsenal and garrison for Indian Affairs troops until 1830 when it became a steamboat terminal servicing both sides of the river. In 1846, Illinois General James Longstreet ordered Colonel George Hennepin's 5th Infantry Regiment (now 1st Infantry Regiment) to take possession of all land north of Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Stonington except for 4 square miles (10 km²) lying within present-day Skokie Ridge Township on what is now North Avenue in Skokie Village and within 2 square miles (3 km²) of today's South Avenue in Reedsburg Township on what is now West Avenue in Rock Island village; this order included also present-day East Avenue in Joliette Heights and today's West Side Drive near Harrison Airport in Elmhurst Township; these orders constituted rock island township boundaries at their inception. In 1861–1862, following long negotiations with other interested parties including those from Peoria County over control of some lands south of lake Michigan that lay beyond present day Winnetka Township on what are now Northwestern Expressway (I-294), Archer Road (today's Route 21), Edison Road (today's Route 10), Kedzie Boulevard (northwest cornerof Kedzie Boulevard/Erie Street intersection), Rush Creek Valley Highway/Route 31WCF BUSINESS PARK subdivision which would include present day downtown Joliette Heights as well as much acreage located between Rush Creek Valley Highway/Route 31WCF BUSINESS PARK and current day Northwest Expressway property line; this dispute resulted from allegations made by then future Mayor Richard Moline about possible collusion between sympathizers or agents of Confederate President Abraham Lincoln during The American Civil War; eventually federal mediators came to resolve it without any physical altercation or violence taking place between residents or government officials representing various factions involved On July 1, 1907 – just one year after Rock Island was organized – its first mayoralty was held with Aiken Jourdan being elected unopposed after serving two terms as deputy mayor under John Daley

Rock Island is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,545 at the 2010 census. Rock Island is the county seat of Cook County and home to many government buildings such as the Illinois State Capitol and the Chicago Police Department. It has also been called "the most important industrial center east of the Mississippi River" by Forbes magazine and "the breadbasket of America" due to its location near both Chicago and Milwaukee. The early history of Rock Island can be traced back to 1814 when fur traders named George Leavenworth and David Brown visited this area on their way from Canada to find land for themselves. In 1817, John Smeaton purchased 5 acres (2 km²) of land south of present-day downtown Rock Island from David Brown for $1,000. Smeaton built a farm there known as Mononoke Settlement which he sold in 1825 to Abraham Lincoln for $5,000. On May 10, 1830 Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order appointing James Millington as Surveyor General for the Territory of Illinois under instructions from President Andrew Jackson. Millington surveyed all of present-day Rock Island within two months; he named it after his friend Daniel Webster who had died in office that year. In 1835 Wm Hickey organized a small group of farmers at Mononoke Settlement into a township which they called Prairie du Chien (Prairie Creek). The first post office was established at Prairie du Chien on November 2, 1840 under the name West Point; it closed on December 6th because no mail could be sent there because the tracks leading there were impassable during winter time. From October 1st through September 30th 1840 residents served warrants advertising family rooms in Green Bay available for rent starting at $2 per week furnished with bedding and firewood; these rooms were used by officers visiting Springfield or other parts of the state during breaks between campaigns.[1] In 1850 Rock Island's first store opened inside what is now known as City Hall Annex located on Main Street just north of current day First Avenue intersection;[2] this store later became part of Sears Holdings Corporation when that company was spun off from Sears & Roebuck Incorporated in 2011.[3] On January 14th 1861 six men - James Aiken (a carpenter), Asahel Curtis (a farmer), John Prentice (a shoemaker), William Wetherbee (an editor), Hiram Berryman (a blacksmith) - founded The Republican Party in Green Bay while they were waiting out inauguration ceremonies related to Ulysses S Grant’s election victory over Abraham Lincoln that took place one day later on January 15th 1861 at Soldier Field in Chicago.[4][5] On July 8th 1865 Union troops burned down what is now downtown Rock Island after Confederate forces burned down several businesses around town following a skirmish near Forest Park Race Course southwest of town;[6][7][8] this event helped spark IL Partisan War #3 that lasted seven months[9][10][11]: although Union troops eventually withdrew from IL prior to war's conclusion on May 12th 1865,[12][13], these Burned Down Buildings Incident(s) remain oneofRockIsland'sMost FamousEvents
