Rock Island, Illinois is home to the world's largest gun manufacturing plant. This plant produces over a thousand firearms each day. The history of the Rock Island Gun Manufacturing Company can be traced back to 1852 when three men, John Hallett, Jesse Wiegand and George Smith began making handguns in a small building on the city's northwest side. In 1864, the company was purchased by E.B. Morton who changed its name to Rock Island Armory Company. The company produced rifles and shotguns for military use as well as law enforcement and target shooting. In 1916, Morton merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company which had been founded in 1892 by Samuel Winchester and brothers Edward (Ted) and Edwin Winchester. At that time, Rock Island Armory became one of the most important rifle companies in America. It continued producing ammunition until 1951 when it was sold to Chiappa Firearms Corporation. By 2000, however, Rock Island's population had declines due to high crime rates and an economic recession that hit many small towns within Cook County hard. In 2006-2007 Mayor James Daley announced plans to reduce Crime levels within the City Limits while continuing to invest in Downtown Rock Island with new public works projects like a $100 million renovation of Union Station which will include a new library branch and Kane County Courthouse annexe; plans for increased retail development around Highway 94; as well as expansion into adjacent neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park or Evanston In 2018-2019 local elected officials voted to switch from Metropolitian government to a form of council governance known as ward representation

The first European sighting of Rock Island was made by Captain John Glenn on July 12, 1814 while orbiting Earth. As he flew over the island he saw strange looking rocks scattered around it and thought they may be ancient ruins. Rock Island was named for General James K. Polk who fought in the American Civil War and died at Appomattox Court House in 1865. He is buried there along with his wife Julia Child and their son Lawrence Polk Jr.. The first store on Rock Island opened in 1857 by Wm. Hallett and associates under the name of The Hallett store No 1. In 1870, Elisha Gray started a flour mill on Main Street which became one of Rock Island's largest employers until its closure in 1984. Other early businesses include an insuranceagency called Aiken & Son from 1872-76; Green Bros., grocery stores from 1880-1900; J & J Clothing Store from 1902-1907; National Glass Works from 1907-1912; Roper Carpeting Company from 1912-1920; Lumber Yards Supply Company from 1920-1925; Goldsmiths Hardware store 1925-1929; Smith Brothers Bakery 1928 to present day In 1924, Rock Island's first high school opened when Central High School moved to new premises across Third Street from the old Central School site on First Avenue South (now Milwaukee Avenue). That same year also saw the opening of First Baptist Church which has been serving as the town's congregation since that time.. In 1957, a new water tower was built at 4th and State Streets to replace an earlier one that had become inadequate due to years of rain damage. That same year also sawthe opening ofthefirst convenience store on Atlantic Drive which later became known as Jewelers Drugstore Incorporated.. From 1958 through 1966, major changes took place at Rockland when it became home to Western Electric Telephone company’s manufacturing plant as well as its original post office building/shop complex (now known as Tower Place). At that time also several other businesses relocated or were acquired including The Kresge Bookstore (later renamed Tower Books), Harry’s Barbershop (later renamed Harry’s Pizza) and finally The Carlisle Hotel after Carlisle Paperie went outof business . During this time period too many residents left for nearby towns such as Lombard IL or Peoria IL due either to economic hardship or racial integration into neighboring cities
The Rock Island Railroad was chartered on October 1, 1846. The railroad was built from Quincy, Illinois to the city of Rock Island, Illinois. On September 25, 1851, the Rock Island Railroad completed its first route from Quincy to Moline. In 1865, the railroad added a line from Moline to Joliet. The railway became a municipally-owned company in 1870 and continued operations until it merged with the Chicago and Northwestern Railway on May 15, 1897.
