The original plat included land that would later become village center including most of present-day downtown Rock Island as well as parts of what are today North Park and South Park Avenues. On July 1, 1860, when both Cook County and Indiana were admitted into the Union as states, Rock Island became one of 12 towns in Cook County which formed the new county government under merging status with Indiana; all but three (Chicago Heights, Glenview, Lincolnwood) remain within Cook County today. On January 1, 1903 – just five years after its incorporation – Rock Island became one of 20 communities inCookCountywhichformedthenewcountygovernmentundermergingstatuswithIndiana;allbutthree (Chicago Heights, Glenview, Lincolnwood) remain within Cook Countytoday. The city's name comes from nearby Mount Zion Baptist Church - built in 1836 by Colored Minister Elijah Boudinot - which once served as both the city's courthouse and jail although it no longer does so today due to building code restrictions placed on churches during segregation era

Rock Island is laid out on the east bank of the Rock River and extends along its length from north to south. The village's original site was on land that now forms part of the city of Chicago. It was founded by General George Washington in 1779 as a small trading post called Wabash Point on what is now State Street. In 1824, Rock Island became an incorporated Village under the name of Arlington Heights. The name Rock Island was changed to its present form in 1892 when it became one of three villages in Kane County that were merged into Chicago. The history of rock island begins with early Native Americans who hunted and gathered wildflowers near where it stands today. In 1819, French traders discovered a tribe of Potawatomi living near Goose Creek and began trade with them for goods such as firearms and tools. Ottawa Chief La Salle negotiated peace between the Potawatomi and France and agreed to sell 400 acres (165 hectares) around Goose Creek to George Washington for $5200 in 1779. This tract formed what is now known as Arlington Heights Township which included modern-day Rock Island Township until 1840 when it merged with Cook County to form Cook County proper.. In 1824, Congress passed an act authorizing Illinois’s first township organization; Potter Parish chose Rock Island as one of its initial townships within Cook County.. On October 15, 1830, voters ratified a charter offeringrock island cityhood.. On December 12th 1830 they elected Emanuel Jankiewicz Mayor with Wm Payson Fenton servingSeconder.. After two years during which no mayor was elected due to lack of funds or political opposition from residents there was finally someone appointed by the Board on January 3rd 1832: John Lackey Sr., who succeeded Emanuel Jankiewicz after he died suddenly while serving as Mayor
Rock Island was founded in 1824 by a group of pioneers from the Illinois Territory. The original town was located on the east bank of the Des Plaines River, about midway between Rockford and Chicago. In 1828, the town became a part of the new state of Illinois.
