Rock Island, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Rock County. The population was 61,814 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Illinois. It is located on the Rock River, which forms its eastern border. The area that would become Rock Island was first inhabited by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in what is now Illinois. The first European to visit this area was Giovanni da Vergnaud, who charted a route between present day Chicago and Kankakee in 1679. By 1795, French traders had established trading posts along both sides of the river and Fort Dearborn was built nearby to protect these interests. In 1803, during the War of 1812, General James Wilkinson surrendered at fort Dearborn after being forced to march his army through Canada with only 10 cannons and 50 men against 150 British troops under Sir George Mackenzie. In 1818, when Iowa became a United States territory following its admission into Union as part of that state's Compromise of 1850, Rock Island became part of Iowa Territory. It remained an Iowa territory until its organization as a city on December 15th, 1868 under the name "Rock Island". At this time it included all present-day Rock County except for some small parcels east of downtown that formed part of Crawford County until that county's creation in 1865 from parts of Winnebago and Des Moines Counties respectively. On October 5th 1870 Rock Island lost its charter as an incorporated town due to lack support from local leaders; however it regained charter status on January 3rd 1871 after passage bylaws establishing limits on corporate powers and admitting new members without prior vote or approval from older members (the last chartered town having been Libertyville on November 6th 1870). The original boundaries were unchanged until they were redrawn by ordinance on July 1st 1911 because Of growth within the city limits since incorporation - including annexation by neighboring unincorporated communities such as West Des Moines and East Clive – while still adhering to traditional lines defining one large ward (actually two wards: north/central Ward One with a population over 25% African American residents while south/southwest Ward Two had less than 25% African American residents)). As result today most people living within City Limits refer to themselves simply as "Residents" or "People Who Live WithinCity Limits." The establishment of Rollin College in 1908 made Rock Island one stoplight away from major educational institutions throughout much OF Illinois so manufacturing quickly replaced agriculture as mainstay economy beginning around 1920s While post WW II boom brought more suburban professionals into town followed by increasing wealth among richer citizens services like libraries were founded etc
