Rock Island is a city in Illinois, located in the northwestern corner of the state. It is the county seat of Rock Islands County and was founded on July 18, 1837, by citizens of La Salle Township. The first store in town was built on Main Street by Wm. E. Halsell and was operated by his brother-in-law, Amos French. The first post office in town was established in 1838, and it continued to be opened until 1865. Rock Island’s history can be traced back to when pioneers arrived here from Missouri in 1837 to start a new life after the end of the American Civil War. In that year, they organized a town government and laid out theireconstruction around what would become downtown Rock Island proper. A few years later they developed an arsenal for arms storage so that local merchants could sell firearms to travelers passing through their area. In 1840 two other stores were opened: one by Isaac Sixel and the other by John Colburn (known today as “J”). At this time people were still primarily farmers who raised livestock and conducted agriculture based trade with surrounding communities; however, some also started businesses manufacturing goods such as saddles and cannons used during war times or blacksmithing items needed for farm work or construction projects such as masonry walls or bridges. Rock Island is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. The Dutch also explored this area during the seventeenth century, but no settlements were established until 1795 whenCaptain John Burroughs established a trading post on the banks of the River Des Plaines near present day Rock Island City. In 1824 Captain Amos Kendall founded Kendallville on what is now Rock Island City after his home town was burned by Indians during an uprising against American settlers in that year. In 1836 Colonel Solomon Sturgis purchased 1/5 interest in Kendallville from Captain John Burroughs for $2,500 cash and began construction of what would become Sturgis cotton gin nearby which he called "Sturgis Mill". The first product made at Sturgis Mill was cottonseed oil which was used to lighten ships' sails before they reached Boston Harbor. In 1837 Senator Daniel Webster visited Sturgis Mill where he noted that "the turning out (of raw cotton) there has been hitherto without parallel within our country".[1] When Republicans took control of Congress in 1937 they passed a bill establishing a Works Progress Administration (WPA) which employed about sixty thousand people throughout Illinois.[2] Activities funded through WPA included projects such as building schools and hospitals; repairing roads; installing streetlights; planting trees; and creating parkland throughout Illinois including Armstrong Park on Windy Hill Road near downtown Chicago).
