The City of Riverdale is located in the heart of Illinois, just minutes from Chicago. One of the earliest communities in this area was founded by Paleo-Indians in the late 1800s. They named their community after a small stream that ran through their land. The first electric guitar was invented in Riverdale by Joe Hill and sales began localizing electric guitars to other parts of the country soon thereafter. In 1928, music mogul Sam Phillips purchased a controlling interest in Vox Guitars and opened up his first store in Riverdale. At this time, American Gibson Guitar Corporation (now Gibson) was headquartered on State Street within walking distance of Vox’s store and production facilities. Today, Gibson is one of America’s largest guitar manufacturers with its manufacturing plants located throughout North America. In 1984, Riverdale residents voted to annex their city into Cook County, Illinois resulting in an increase in tax rates for residents within the city limits as well as an increase for all other county residents. Despite these challenges,Riverdale has continued to thrive over the years due to its supportive community infrastructure which includes a variety of parks, libraries, schools and businesses.

In 1994–1995, Riverdale changed its name back to its original name after voting to allow for an open-air mall in their town center. The mall closed down in 2001 but reopened in 2006 as a mixed-use development called "The Linden". It has since been renamed again to "Rivervale" and remains one of the most popular shopping destinations in town.
Riverdale is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Riverdale" may come from the Illiniwek or Ojibwa word "riverside". The first white person to live in Riverdale was James Robertson who settled there in 1827. He and his family were the first people to land on what is now known as Chicago's South Side. Riverdale grew rapidly due to its proximity to Snelling Avenue and other transportation arteries. In 1881, a group of men led by Wahlberg built a gristmill on White Oak Creek just east of present-day Riverdale. The mill operated until 1902 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1907, John Fritchey became the first black man to be elected as mayor of Chicago after winning an open seat in that year's general election; he served two terms before leaving office for personal reasons in 1911. In 1925, Patrick Jealous became Mayor of Chicago after succeeding Fritchey. Under Jealous' leadership, Riverdale saw some growth with many new businesses being opened including several shoe stores and a movie theater which would eventually become the Loop Theatre (later Regal). However, during Jealous' term riverdamming operations caused significant damage which would have lasting repercussions onriver life and ecology; ultimately resultinginthe lossof over $100 million worth of property along the Illinois River system alone between 1928 and 1932 alone!
