Riverdale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and his wife Marilla as a part of the Chicago area. The community has been located in the present-day Riverdale neighborhood on the north side of Chicago for over 200 years. The first settler in Riverdale was George Washington Doane, who arrived with his family in 1836. Doane's brother, John Dolan, also settled in Riverdale and built the first schoolhouse there. In 1839, James K. Polk moved to Riverdale from Palatine and began to preach at the First Presbyterian Church there. He later became president of Illinois and served in that capacity from 1840 to 1845. In 1850, John Fenton purchased land east of downtown Chicago from Anthony DeFrancesco for $1,000 cash. He built a log cabin near what is now Riverdale Elementary School and named it Fentonville after himself and his wife Esther (née DeFrancesco). DeFrancesco continued to live there until his death in 1865; his widow took possession of the property after his death. In 1872, Charles Waukegan bought some land east of Riverdale from Fentonville’s widow for $2,500 cash; this property became known as Waukegan Heights. In 1898–99, Waukegan built a new home on this parcel which he called “The White House” because it was white against the brick buildings around it at that time (the only such structure then remaining within blocks of riverfront). The house still stands today within walking distance of both Riverside Park and Waukegan Stadium on State Street between Randolph Road and Pulaski Road NW.). A second settlers group came to live near what is now Riverdale during this time: The Gebel family established themselves here about 1888 or 1889 by purchasing tracts totaling 160 acres (6 km²) along Lockport Creek west of where they had settled earlier on Long Island Sound near modern day Elmhurst Avenue/Route 54 southbound between 95th Street/State Road 503W./Lake Shore Drive NW., just upstream from where current-day Park View Boulevard ends at 90th Street/State Road 503E.. A millstream ran through their farmland providing power for their mills which operated until 1957 when an electric plant was built across the street adjacent to their lot without disturbing their milling operation.. This millstream also powered two waterfalls on Lockport Creek which are still visible today: Gebel Fallsuncle Falls downstream from Gebel Mill Ruins [ map ] . The Gebels were also owners or operators of one or more other farms within 1 mile (2 km) radius including Peoria Grove Cemetery , now home to Peoria Mills United Methodist Church . These additional farms remain largely unoccupied but may contain remnants dating back to pre-Civil War days including tools used by early roadbuilders
