Riverdale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1849. The population at the 2010 census was 17,711. The name of Riverdale comes from a stream that flows through it. Gunmakers began to use harder materials for case construction such as birch bark or chestnut veneer which increased the durability of the case. These holsters remain popular today and are still used by many law enforcement agencies worldwide. During World War II, Riverdale saw an increase in demand for handguns due to the need for patriotic slogans on weapons being printed on military items such as tanks and artillery pieces. As a result, several businesses in Riverdale started making handguns available at special prices only for military personnel who could afford them (such as army officers). Riverdale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is the namesake of the Riverdale neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. The town was founded by Potawatomi Indians in 1837 and was part of the Town of West Side until it became a separate municipality in 1905. In 1924, Riverdale became an Indian reservation. The population was 9,500 at the 2010 census. The first residents of Riverdale were Potawatomi Indians who lived along the Fox River. They built their lodges near where draining ditches now stand on what is now Abraham Lincoln Road. In 1837, they accompanied General Henry Ford as he surveyed land for his new township. Ford donated some land to build a village on his property on the north side of Chicago; this village was called "Riverdale." The first settler in Riverdale was Daniel Denton, who arrived in 1840 from Kentucky with his family and started to farm around milepost 7 on today's Northwest Side road map. Denton named his tract "Rivervale" after its flowing stream which he saw running through rolling woodlands near his house. In 1847, American Civil War veteran John Prentice came to live in Riverdale and help rebuild wagon trains after they were derailed by weather conditions en route from St Louis to Springfield, Missouri during winter ride home from war-time service as part of Major General Sherman’s March tothe Sea campaign against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewing.. He also raised money for local charities through selling goods door-to-door throughout much of Cook County including Riverdale Bottom and adjacent areas eastward along the Fox Valley beyond present day University Park neighborhood across Northwestern Expressway (I-94) from downtown Chicago proper - thus becoming one of only two communities that raised taxes directly from individuals within their own jurisdiction during those days...Prentice’s efforts continue into our present day with contributions made annually by many community members both past and present including several descendants currently living hereabouts It should be noted that although most early settlers originally hailed from Kentucky or other parts of southern Indiana/western Ohio - river valleys such as those located at or near Lake Michigan afforded similar grazing opportunities for large numbers (>10 head per acre) hunting buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis), deer (Cervus elaphus), turkey (Aquila chrysolophus), wild pigs (Sus scrofa), red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and opossums (Didelphis virginiana) long prior to European settlement...these areas continued to provide essential resources necessary for human subsistence well into later times Although initially quite agricultural - planting corn, beans etc.; raising dairy cows; harvesting fruits trees etcetera -river valleys increasingly opened up over time towards Milwaukee & downstream areas newly settled following World War II due principally to increased truck traffic thru ensuing commercial development & suburban growth elsewhere within Cook County including Bridgeport/Milwaukee & even unto Evanston further west along I-94
