The area that makes up Riverdale was originally inhabited by two groups of Native Americans: the Potawatomi and the Ojibwe. In 1818, when Illinois became a U.S. state, Riverdale was included in what was then called Kankakee County. The first settlers to arrive in Riverdale were among those who came to Indiana Territory during the Northwest Indian War (1809-1813). These arriving immigrants were primarily Methodist Episcopalians from North Carolina and Georgia who had traveled downriver to make their way eastward through what is now Kentucky and Ohio counties. Many of these early settlers built log cabins near where they eventually would reside. By 1830, however, most of these early residents had either moved away or died from disease brought over by their arrival or during the war itself. In 1829, General James Shields founded a trading post on the current site of Fort Dearborn on the Sangamon River near present day Arlington Heights. This trading post served as an important link between Chicago and northwest Michigan for traders looking to purchase goods unavailable at home or transported overland via wagons because there were no roads then available linking Chicago with other parts of America. Because Shields' post offered excellent crossings for shipping goods across this stretch of waterway, it soon became known as "the Mother Road". The fort also served as a storage facility for local traders until it finally burned down in 1847 due to British military shelling while under American control following its fall in Canada.). The first settler in Riverdale was John Henniker who arrived around 1800 along with his family from Pennsylvania/New York City.. Riverdale is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Riverdale was John Potter who arrived in 1827. He and his family were followed by other pioneers including Jesse Winchester and David Conant who all built homes on the same land that now forms the town center. In 1846, James Buchanan Polk was born here and he attended public school until age 12 when he moved to Decatur to work on a farm. He became interested in politics and decided to return home to run for office. When he won his seat in Congress, he helped pass legislation creating Riverdale as an incorporated village with its own government which it still has today. During World War II, Riverdale played an important role as a munitions production center due to its location at the confluence of two major rivers: the Rock Island and Des Plaines Rivers. The plant produced munitions for both sides of the conflict and created many jobs for local residents. After the war ended, Riverdale lost some of its industrial activity but retains its nickname of "Munitions Valley."
