Illinois was one of the original states to ratify the United States Constitution. Illinois became a state in 1818 and, as part of the Compromise of 1850, ceded many lands southeast of the Mississippi River to Missouri. In 1853, Illinois created its own university system, which included UIUC. In 1868, UIUC became one of four universities in what is now the University of Chicago System. In 1912, UIUC became one of only two graduate schools in the United States (the other being Columbia University) awarded a doctoral degree by an American university. Beginning in 1916, UIUC began awarding undergraduate degrees as well. The following year, UIUC joined with Northwestern University and Rush Medical College to create Northwestern Illinois Medical School (NIMS). NIMS is now one of five medical schools affiliated with theUniversity of Chicago Medicine System. In 1935, UIUC celebrated its centennial and erected a large wooden statue on campus entitled "The Great Architect." The statue is commemorative of all that has been accomplished at UIUC since its founding—including over 100 patents and more than 350 inventions—and represents bothUIUC's stature as a world-renowned research institution and also how far we have come since then.

Riverdale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Riverdale is located along the Dan Ryan Expressway and has a small shopping center and few businesses. The first settlers in Riverdale were those who trekked overland from Michigan in 1837 to find land they could farm and build homes on. By 1860, there were only six families remaining in Riverdale when it became a township. This act gave river townships their current names; Clinton Township becameRiverdale Township when it was incorporated into Cook County on February 14, 1872 In 1892, John Fenton founded an ice cream company in what is now downtown Riverdale with his brother Augustus Fenton. John Fenton turned down offers to move his business to Hollywood because he wanted to keep it close to home; he died just three months later after making informal plans to open another store there should things not work out with his first one Riverdale's growth came primarily due to its proximity to Chicago – which made it easy for businesses such as John Fenton's ice cream company and Sears Roebuck & Co.'s department store easier access to customers During World War II, much of north central Illinois was bombed by American bombers; parts ofRiverdale were Hit especially hard After America entered World War II, heavy industry quickly moved intothe area including chemical plants and auto factories In 1955–1956 Johnson Controls Incorporated built their world headquarters adjacent to McCormick Place – this was followed by other companies like Northrop Grumman Corporation and US Bancorp moving intoriver valleys across northern Cook County After years of steady growth throughout much of the 1970s through 1980s due largely to suburbanization (urbanization began moving into eastern Cook County starting around 1950), surging population growth rates between 1990-1994 caused some concerns over infrastructure adequacy particularly given predictions that no more than 30% of all jobs would be located within commuting distanceof major cities by 2020 ; this issue has been addressed somewhat since then with new construction projects such as Union Station being completed proximateto major job centers . As recently as 2000–2001 unidentified water moccasins were found inhabited within certain areas near downtown Riverdalenumerous neighborhoods have experienced significant gentrification over recent decades . Today many people identify themselves as “river people” or simply “Illinoisans”
The Riverdale community is located in the northwestern corner of Illinois, on the banks of the Mississippi River. It was founded by German immigrants in 1812 as a farming community on the site of what is now known as East St. Louis. In 1826, the town was renamed for General James K.
