Riverdale is one of the poorest and most segregated communities in Illinois. The population of Riverdale was only 6,000 in 1870 when it was annexed by Chicago. For example, the local paper is published on Tuesdays instead of Saturdays because Wednesday is considered a day off for workers at nearby factories. Riverdale was once a thriving farming community located in the heart of Illinois. Today, Riverdale is one of the most abandoned communities in all of Illinois. The community was once home to over 1,000 residents and their families. However, today only a handful of people live within the boundaries of Riverdale. The community’s history began in 1827 when Isaac Noble purchased land within what is now Riverdale from James K. Polk. Over time, the village grew and prospered until it reached its peak around 1915-1920. At that time, Riverdale had a population of 2,500 residents and employed 100+ individuals as farmers, mechanics, laborers and cleaners. Unfortunately, by the early 1920s there were few jobs available in rural America due to World War I and Prohibition which caused many businesses to close down or flee the area during times of economic crisis. In addition to this problem, many residents abandoned their homes due to fears for safety after numerous murders took place in neighboring towns during that time period. Althoughriverdale once boasted an extensive manufacturing sector which produced everything from tractors to televisions (thanks to nearby Carbondale), those days are long gone too; most production ceased around 1940 with only a single company still remaining today – JBL Corporation – still using local materials throughout their products even though they are no longer made in Riverdale itself!
