In 1820, John Brown produced his “Fugitive Slave” pistol at his manufacturing plant on Elm Street in Riverdale. This new type of firearm allowed people to purchase slaveholders access to firearms without fear of retribution from abolitionists who considered such weapons illegal. In 1836, John Hargrave opened Hargrave & Son Gun Shop on State Street in Riverdale. This business became one of the most importantgun retailers inRiverdaledominant into the 20th century. Hargrave specializedin importing European-style rifledguns and smooth bore muzzleloading rifles intothe United States from Europe as well as selling ammunition and accessories theretofore unknown to Americans. His shop also served as a meeting place for local farmers, hunters,and shooters who would come together monthly for competition or relaxation purposes

However, there are still a few businesses that stay open here and some holiday traditions remain unchanged such as Christmas shopping season or Fourth of July fireworks display
