Riverdale is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,244 at the 2010 census. Riverdale is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by the city of Chicago to the south and west, Lake Michigan to the north, and Kane County to the east. The name "Riverdale" comes from two different places: one was on a small stream that ran through what is now Riverdale village, and the other was near where a post office would be built. The first place was chosen because it had a clear watershed - it drained into both Potawatomi Creek and Rock Island Canal - which made for easy water access. The second choice referred to an old family name which derived from Ridgefield in Connecticut (now Ridgefield Park). When Colonel John Morton purchased land in 1814 for $10 per acre (the equivalent of $1 million today), he named his new community after George Washington's home state - Virginia!. After some debate, Congress passed an act authorizing President James K. Polk to establish three mail roads across Missouri on December 3, 1836; one linking Fort Wayne with Springfield via Kansas City; another connecting St. Louis with Jefferson City via Cairo; and yet another joining Springfield with Council Bluffs via Omaha! Polk approved these plans on December 9th! On January 1st 1837, Riverdale became part of Plainfield Township! This consolidation created a much larger township than what had been before - Plainfield had only 8 voting members while Riverdale had 24! A few years later on October 15th 1841 when Plainfield Township merged into Village of Riverford (!), all of what used to be known as Rivervale proper became part of Village Of Riverford! Today there are still portions of both townships that are not within any specific municipality or town limits... but they're all considered part of 'Riverdale'. Today riverValley maintains close ties with its origins by hosting annual events such as Our Lady's Festival Christmas lights display at Riverside Park followed by ice skating during Freeze Night at Calumet ICE Rink located just off I-55 next door to our high school library
