The first white settlers in what is now Riverdale were farmers and their families who came to the area in 1857 after being displaced by Native American tribes. In 1871, the Illinois Central Railroad built a line through the community and named it after Walnut Street (now Rogers Road) in Philadelphia where many Illinois Central train whistle-blowers had come for work. In 1902, John Pierpont Morgan Sr., one of America's richest men, purchased land adjacent to where Riverdale now stands. He planned to build a large mansion called "Morgan Park," but construction never started because he died before anything could be done on it. However, his son John Pierpont Morgan Jr. continued to develop the property and renamed it Riverdale after himself in 1924. In 1957, when local high school students formed their own student council, they changed its name from "Student Council No 1" to "Riverdale Township High School Council". In 1961, when River Valley Junior-Senior High School opened its doors for grades 7-12, it became known as Rivervale Middle School; however following complaints from parents that their children were not getting enough instruction at home due to lack of space at school,[2]rivervale middle was renamed again in 1984–1985 as River Valley High School (later renamed again to rivervale). During World War II many residents served in the military or worked with war production plants outside of town; some remain buried there today within walking distance of their homes. One such resident is Floyd Rayburn who lived on Ridge Road near present day Kildare Boulevard until his death during WWII while serving with General Motors Corp.'s Waltham Truck Plant located just east of downtown Chicago; he remains unidentified but buried within walking distance of his home today along with other members of GM's wartime workforce which includes employees like Henry Ford II and Leo Tolstoy who both live near Dearborn Heights north suburb today.)

Riverdale is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 22,914 as of the 2010 census. Riverdale is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the communities of Glenview to the east, Downers Grove to the south, Northbrook to the west, and Westchester to the north. The town was founded in 1871 when a group of settlers from New England moved into what is now Riverdale from nearby Lincoln Park. The name "Riverdale" comes from an Indian word meaning "the river that flows through my land." In November 1881, a fire destroyed most of what had been houses in what is now Riverdale; only five homes were left standing by that time. In 1902, construction began on a new school for students in Riverdale which became known as Star Elementary School. In 1923, construction began on a new hospital which became known as Stritch Hospital. It served as both an emergency room and full-time medical center until it closed its doors in 1978. Today, only one wing remains of Stritch Hospital - called Tower 1 - and it serves as a museum operated by the city of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. In 1957, Riverdale experienced its first tornado outbreak when three EF3 tornadoes touched down within minutes of each other just east of town limits near La Porte Road and Irving Park Boulevard. damageincluded extensive destruction to homes and businesses along La Porte Road between Irving Park Boulevard and Diversey Avenue (now Dempster Street). One death was caused by this violence: Raymond Whitehead who lost his life after being struck by debris from one of these Tornadoes while playing outside his home on LaPorte Road just east of town limits with his two young daughters at his side In 1980s & 1990s there were many small fires starting due to open flame but no injuries reported
The Riverdale community was founded in 1847 by General James K. Polk and his wife, Sarah Webb Polk. The town was named for the Upper Indiana River which forms its eastern border. The town had a population of only 100 people when it was created, but it grew rapidly thanks to the influx of settlers from nearby Indiana and Illinois. By 1860, Riverdale had a population of 3,000 people. It continued to grow as a result of its location on the trade route between Chicago and St Louis. In 1868, Riverdale became one of the first towns in Illinois to be granted city status. As a result, it became one of the most important cities in the state. In 1907, Riverdale voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation by Chicago; this made Riverdale one of the largest cities in Illinois.
