It is located on the banks of theriver Mississippi River. The name "Riverdale" originated from a Quaker Meeting House on the then-town's east side which was called Warner Road after William Warner, an early settler and one of its first residents. The land around that house became part of what is now Riverdale when it was annexed by Chicago in 1847. In 1868, John Prentice, president and founder of Sears & Roebuck, located his company's initial stores in what are now Merchandise Mart Park and Riverside Drive (now South Side Avenue), just north of where Main Street currently meets Anthony Drive. In 1875, Wm Sutherland bought 1/4 mile (1 km) east of present-day Riverdale from John Potter for $100 per acre (2 hectares). He named it "Somerset Heights". By 1888, he had built 150 houses there – most still standing today – including many grandiose residences such as "The Gables" and "Belle's Place". It wasn't until 1912 that some homes were replaced with modern brick structures; much later another block to the south led to Sears Tower. In 1916–17 a group of five men organized as the African American Round Table met at Myer's Department Store in Hyde Park to plot ways to improve self-esteem among black Americans living in white neighborhoods across Chicago; their goal was not only public awareness but also change within individual households and communities. Among those who attended this meeting were future Ulysses S Grant III (later Ulysses S Grant II), Drayton Johnson (founder and first CEO Ameritech), Julius Rosenwald (founder Kress Corporation) and James Weldon Johnson (later Lyndon B Johnson). They decided to rename themselves "The Harlem Renaissance Association", later changed back to "Riverdale Negro American Civic League". A few years later Robert Moses began planning his vast new park on State Street between 63rd Street and 64th Street which would include Lakeview Terrace nearpresent-day Irving Park Rd., thought up as an addition because it would be close enough for blacks to get into central Chicago without going outside city limits; however construction never started due largely to funding shortages during World War I before general Mitchell Palmer finally got involved with getting money from various sources for postwar reconstruction purposes It wasn't until 1954 that architects Minoru Yamasaki & Associates designed riverfront development along Randolph Road which includes several high rises including One Oak Plaza housing estates completed in 1957. This was followed by several other large projects such as George Washington University's School of Dentistry on Pulaski Road between 60thand 61st Streets completed in 1961 followed by Stritch School No 2 on Goose Island between West Side Highway and Ravenswood Avenue completed in 1965 creating one large integrated school district encompassing all three areas known collectively as 'Riverdale'. Today there are over 25K people living here making this a very diverse community with alot Of different cultures!

The first people to live in what would become Riverdale were farmers who began growing corn, beans, potatoes, and other vegetables near where they irrigated their crops. In 1836, John Pritzker purchased 350 acres (1 km2) of land that included present-day Riverdale from Michael Kappenberger for $3 per acre ($/km²). He named his new community after himself and changed its name to "Riverdale". In 1892–93, while working as an inspector with the city's Department of Streets and Sewers, Richard Muther developed a plan for cleaning up riverbanks near downtown Chicago which would eventually be known as Muther Boulevard. He proposed that the city build a canal along these banks which would allow water runoff from nearby factories to flow into Lake Michigan instead of being used by residents flooding their yards each time rain or snow fell; this proposal became known as Muter Boulevard. When it was realized that this project would cost more than just money than could be raised through private donations alone, Mayor John Thompson III decided to fund it with public funds instead . The first section opened in 1895; today it forms part of Portage Park . After World War II ended andChicago experienced growth spurt – largely thanks to immigrants coming streaming into the city looking for work – many people moved into what is now Riverdale during this period including many members of Mayor Thompson's family who had settled there before him including his father John Cavanaugh Jr., uncle Maurice Kappenberger Sr., aunt Hilda Kappenberger Meyer etc.. By 1950 there were over 10 thousand people living in Riverdale according to its official website . This growth continued until 1969 when annexation by Cook County resulted in much lower housing prices causing many families to move out again despite high schools still not opening yet (due primarily to lack of space), driving many residents out onto majorities black blocks such as Maplewood (now Englewood) or Lawndale which are now majority white areas if they remain at all within walking distance from any major shopping district like Downingtown or South Side Village . However some continue residing within these boundaries due mostly to historical ties such as relationships with friends or family members who have also retained residency within those boundaries over time
