In 1854, Lieutenant Colonel John Pope developed a new system for using rifle sights withgunlights called “Pope’s Gunsight System”. This system allowed for easier target acquisition and provided a more accurate shot than traditional Rifle Sights systems available at the time. By 1861, all American military posts had come under control of the Union Army and usage of gunlights ceased altogether within their confines*. However, they continued to be used sporadically outside American military encampments* until 1865 when they finally became completely mainstream in America*. With their widespread acceptance came increased regulation*, which led to their eventual decline in popularity over the next few decades.* However*, they continue to remain an important part of firearm history* and are still regularly used today across many different applications*.
