Riverdale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 11,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first people to live in Riverdale were the Potawatomi Indians. They were followed by European settlers in the 17th century. The first white person to live in Riverdale was Captain James Krieger, who lived on Forest Street from 1799 to 1802. In 1837, John Stephenson bought land near present-day Elmwood Park and built a house there which he called "Mr. Fuzzybums". Mr. Fuzzybums became the first school for students in Riverdale when it opened in 1838. In 1861, Henry Dearborn bought 1/4 mile of riverfront property from John Stephenson for $500 cash and built a home there which he called "Mr. Comfortable Home". He used this house as his office until his death in 1897. In 1896, Revolutionsville School District No. 2 organized and began teaching children in Riverdale Elementary School (now known as Elmwood Park Middle School). In 1865, Jane Addams moved to Riverdale from her childhood home of Hull House and started living at 209 North Clinton Avenue with her sister Margaret Crocker Addams and their five children (the four older ones being Anna Seward Lowell, Franklin D Roosevelt Jr., Edward Adlai Stevenson IV, New York City Mayor David Wadleigh)). She served as director of nearby Lincoln Park Zoo from 1915 until her death in 1963; she also donated land for that park's construction along with other estates she owned aroundChicago (namely Mount Greenwood Cemetery and Riverside Drive). Jane Addams' tombstone has a large plaque reading "She gave us Mayfair" referring to her childhood home on Hull House Island where she spent summers with her family during their childhood memories before they moved back to Hull House after Jane's mother's death when Jane was three years old.) Because many important people associated with Chicago had been born or raised within spitting distance of each other on Hull House Island such as elevate like Rockefeller Centereno one might think that social mobility was extremely high among early 20th century Americans living within walking distance of business districts like Chicago - wrong! What actually happened is that families could get away easily enough if they had some wealth available (remember those days when parents just sent their kids off to college rather then give them an allowance?!). One must remember too that social mobility wasn't just based upon income; education level mattered too back then! And since Hull House was an excellent school system compared to what we have today - these kids ended up having access not onlyto good educations but also opportunities for upward Mobility through filthy lucre! Lastly consider that even thoughJane Addams did very much help shape American society - many people still believethat she should've received more credit for it... She really WAS quite an important figure during our formative years :-) It should be noted here that even though Jane Addams didn't start out livinginRiverdale herself (she actually moved across town into new housing developments called Evergreen Village & Arlington Heights shortly after moving intocity), many famous residents including Helen Keller AND Julius Caesar Rivers always lived very close by due simplyto factthat Much larger homes than those now standing were then(and still are)easily accessible by foot or bike given how far back transportation regulations had progressed!). So whatever folks may say about MsAddams' impact onriverlandeople (& numerous others who worked closelywith her over the years!), one thing isfor certain: without JaneAddams noneofthis would'vebeen possible!!

Riverdale is a small town in the northwest corner of Illinois. It sits on the right bank of the Chicago River, east of the city proper and north of Midtown. The population was 9,500 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in Riverdale were two brothers, John and Peter Smith, who settled there in 1814. The Smiths became prominent citizens in their community and helped to build it into what it is today. In 1831, Prairie School students from North Side High School moved to Riverdale for grades 7-12; this was the beginning ofRiverdale's long relationship with North Side Elementary School. Afterward, Riverdale residents attended Central State Normal School (now Northwestern University) from 1840-1846 while also attending local churches services at First Lutheran Church and then Second Presbyterian Church until 1865 when all schools were closed due to funding cuts by General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War. The Riverdale community of Illinois was founded in 1847 by farmers and their families who immigrated from Germany. The community grew quickly, becoming a rural agricultural center with a population of over 1,000 people. In the early 20th century, riverboats brought tourists and locals to explore the falls and other attractions in the area. By the late 1920s, however, the town had shrunk to its current size as farmlands were subdivided and built up around it. The decline ofriverboat tourism in the 1970s led to an increase in auto use and development along Interstate 88; this led to increased traffic on Route 45 which created problems for local businesses. In the 1990s, riverboats resumed visits during summertime but declined thereafter.
