Riverdale is a small town in Illinois, located about 25 miles northwest of Chicago. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. Riverdale is one of the most affluent towns in the Midwest and has been ranked as one of the best places to live in Illinois by Forbes magazine. The first permanent settler in what is now Riverdale was George Washington Carver, who arrived in 1837. Carver named his community after a nearby watercourse, which he found to be rich in coal and other minerals. By 1860, Riverdale had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1867, wealthy businessman Hanks Cooley purchased land near present-day Riverdale from the federal government for $2 million. Cooley built a mansion on the site and called it Riverland Hall. He used his wealth to promote education and industry in Riverdale and housed many of Illinois' prominent politicians and businessmen at his home during their terms as Mayor or President of the United States. In 1905, Cooley donated his estate to the city of Chicago for use as an open-air schoolhouse known as Riverside Park School District No. 2 (later renamed Forest Hills Elementary School). During World War II, much production took place at Riverland Hall's munitions plants; however, due to wartime bombing raids that destroyed many homes and businesses within reach of downtown Chicago, few people lived near these factories anymore after 1945. Nevertheless, some buildings still remain standing today—such as Riverside Park School District No 2's former Athletic Field House—that are used for public events such as concerts or basketball games by local organizations like First Team Sports Props LLC (FTSP) Incorporated (formerly known as "Inner Harbor Music & Arts"). The Riverdale community was first settled in 1836. The first post office was established in 1838 and the name of the town changed to Riverdale in 1849. The village of Riverdale was organized in 1865 and incorporation took place in 1876. In 1903, the village merged with the towns of Park Ridge and Arlington Heights to form a larger city.
