Riverdale is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,545 at the 2010 census. Riverdale is located on the south side of Chicago and is bordered by the Calumet River to the east and west, and by Riverside Park to the north. The townsite was first developed as a farming district in 1848 by James K. Polk, who purchased of land from the Potawatomi Nation. The area that now includes Riverdale was originally known as Arlington Heights because it included many of Illinois' most powerful families. In 1856, when Indiana became a state, Riverdale became part of Cook County under its new state constitution; it remained an independent township until 1959 when it merged with Kane Township to form Riverdale Village. In 1925, Reva Fenton organized what would become one of America's earliest religious organizations called "The Fellowship." She founded it as an outreach program for low-income mothers working two jobs to provide their children with education and wholesome living conditions while they pursued professional careers or Entered into religious beliefs outside of traditional Christianity or Islam which were not accessible to them at that time. Over time The Fellowship grew into one of America's largest social services agencies reaching more than 2 million people annually across multiple denominations including Jehovah's Witnesses (2006), Lutheran Church USA (2008) and African Methodist Episcopal Zion (2009). In 2007 philanthropist Mellody Hobson donated $10 million towards building a new residence park adjacent to Freedom Hill Cemetery in honor of her late father Drilon Hobson Sr., founder and president emeritusof AMEZ Regional Services Inc., one of America's oldest black church services provider(2010). From 1968 until his death in 1984 Reva Fenton served as president pro tempore for the Illinois House Of Representatives representing IL-1st District including parts of Rivervale before becoming First Lady after her husband succeeded him in that position upon his death due to prior health problems unrelated to politics On October 16th 2008 Reva Fenton will be commemorated with a permanent memorial at Freedom Hill Cemetery in memory both during her lifetimeservinghercitizenofthedrivervalleyandafterherdeath . In 1847, the Illinois Central Railroad was built through Riverdale and began serving the town. In 1881, the company merged with the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The following year, Riverdale became a part of Chicago.
