In 1857, Andrew Johnson became president of the United States and ordered all Indian tribes be removed from their homes east of the Mississippi River. This order led to many farmers moving into what is now Riverdale because they lacked access to food resources east of the river. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed another executive order ordering all Native Americans living west of the border be forcibly moved back into their original reservations or face harsh punishment. As a result, many people in this area decided to move to Riverdale as well.

It remains a popular tourist destination for those living close to downtown Chicago or Moline Airport.

However, after the war ended, Riverdale started to decline as businesses left for larger cities or because of competition from newer towns on the riverbank such as Palatine and Dearborn Heights
