Riverdale is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,635 at the 2010 census. Riverdale was named after the Ford River, which flows through it. It was founded in 1871 by German immigrants and became a village in 1915. The town's first store opened in 1871 on Main Street and grew to be one of the largest in Illinois before moving to its current location on State Street in 1922. In 1914, the village of Riverdale merged with neighboring Aurora to form a larger community known as Aurora-Riverdale. Ammunition manufacturing began operations here in 1916 when John Dorman started making ammunition for his father's gun business. The company had two buildings - one on State Street and one on Sheridan Road - until 1975 when they closed down due to economic conditions. today there are still remnants of both buildings from that time including an exhibit about Dorman Ammo products at the Kane County History Museum

The Riverdale Armory is one of the oldest firearms stores in Riverdale, Illinois. The store was founded in 1871 by James L. Flood and his brother-in-law, Amos S. Biddle. The library at the armory is named for Flood and Biddle. In 1911, the armory became aarms depot when it became a part of Armoury Depot Company. The depot closed in 1954. In 1928, the armory opened its own manufacturing center for pistols and revolvers under the name "Chicago Arms". In 1961, Chicago Arms merged with Springfield Armory to form Springfield Armory Corporation (SAC). In 1970, SAC sold its handguns business to Brownells Incorporated. In 1998, Brownells sold its firearms business to Cerberus Capital Management LP. That same year, Riverdale Armory reopened as an ammunition store after being closed for many years due to damage caused by a fire that burned down the old building in 1922.

RIVERDALE HISTORY: In 1811, Connecticut and New York families migrated to what is today Riverdale on the west bank of the Sangamon River. The area was part of an ancient hunting ground known as "Nassau" because several chiefs lived there at that time. By 1800, the area had become one of the most heavily populated settlements in Northwest Territory (now Northwestern Illinois). In 1869, when the Illinois Central Railroad arrived in Riverdale – making it one of its first stops – it transformed this sleepy rural community into a thriving metropolis with 1,500 residents! OVER TIME: As riverboats pulled upriver to dock at Nassau Landing on Middleton Street – just south of present day Broadway Avenue – traders and travelers disembarked for hours each day to explore this beautiful site. early homes were built along Middleton Street outbuildings still visible today such as Holmes’ House (later renamed Maplewood), which was located on what is now Elm Drive; Ladd’s Tavern near where I-55 meets Ulysses Road; John Sayles Store on Elm Street across fromPresent Day State Theatre; Mrs. Sayles’ house on High School South side now used as apartments; Packard hotel/motel/restaurant/laundromat at junction of State Route 3 & Elm); Fulton Sugar Refinery north side next to present day Fordham University campus ); various churches such as St Michael’s Episcopal Church - built around 1830 by Rev James Kappe - Resurrection Lutheran Church erected c1850 - First Methodist Episcopal Church erection began c1860) . There were also stores catering specifically to riverboat passengers such as Mr Sweeting’s Wharf Store (established 1850) and Gourley & Company Wagon Shop (established 1865). locals also engaged in agricultural production such as potatoes growing on adjoining land leased from Northern Mennonite settlers named John Ziegler; Singer Sewing Machines manufactured by George Singer factory located east side streets between Canal Street & Main Street . In 1901, when Normal School opened nearby offering education for women only (!), Riverdale quickly became an important commercial center for women entrepreneurs who ran their own businesses including banks, grocery stores and clothing boutiques along Broadway Avenue from Nassau Landing all the way upriver to Mason City Shopping Center (now part Of Derryfield Mall ). In recent years local businesses have come back but expanding beyond their original cores with new music venues / bars / restaurants etc….. Today many members live within walking distance or even right off Interstate 55 !!

The area now known as Riverdale was first inhabited by the Potawatomi tribe. The first European to see and explore this area was French trader Jacques Marquette in 1679. He described the area as a "wilderness." In 1777, General James K. Polk passed through this area on his way from New Orleans to Chicago. He noted the large natural resources available in the area and named it after President George Washington's home state of Virginia, which he had just crossed into on his way to India. In 1808, John Jacob Astor founded a trading post at what is now Riverdale Park. In 1825, Congress designated the entire region around present-day Riverdale as part of the Indiana Territory. This territory was later ceded to Illinois by Tecumseh Kane in 1836. By 1840, most of present-day Riverdale had been developed as a farming community with few buildings other than churches and schoolhouses. In 1860, during the American Civil War, Union forces killed many Confederate soldiers northwest of present-day Riverdale while raiding enemy camps Battlefield Brewery near what is now Elmwood Cemetery. This event helped spur development in that direction and led to increased trade between Illinois and Indiana along the river valley. In 1870, when Chicago became an independent city, its leaders decided thatRiverdale should be its centerpiece because it would be an important commercial and social district connecting different parts of town – something that hadn't yet happened elsewhere in town lines or neighborhood boundaries east of Dearborn Street (then called Dearborn Avenue). Accordingly,riverdale became one of downtown Chicago's main business districts; businesses located there included banks (the old First National Bank building still stands), insurance companies (eastern Insurance Company building at 5th/Nash streets), grocery stores ( Kroger store at 1111 N Damen Ave.), law firms (Taylor & Hennigan Building at 111 W State St.), hoteliers (Hilton Garden Inn at 111 S Superior Ave.),and theaters (the Regal Theatre across from Roosevelt Park).
