River Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. River Forest was founded by farmers in 1855 and its first post office was established in 1859. It became a city on April 6, 1907. The name of the town comes from the nearby river that provided drinking water for the community. The village of River Forest was founded on November 16, 1855 by John Sibley and his wife Catharine Greenough. Sibley had been born in 1794 near Easton, Pennsylvania and arrived in Sangamon County, Illinois as a settler in 1825. He died at the age of eighty-six years on October 11, 1888 while living at his farm southwest of River Forest with his wife Catharine Greenough and their five children: John Sibley (1826-1905), Mary Jane Sibley (1828-1900), George Washington Sibley (1830-1907), Eliza Jane Sibley (1832-1920) and Anna Seward Sibley (1835-1910). In 1859, one year after River Forest's incorporation as a city under the laws of Illinois,[1] it became home to one of America's earliest electric power plants when an American Electric Railway company constructed a line from Joliet to Springfield through rural farmland east of Chicago.[2] By 1906 there were about 350 people living in River Forest;[3] however during World War I when production increased for munitions manufacturing,[4][5] many residents took up arms against Austria and Czechoslovakia which were occupying their country; they went into hiding until they could be smuggled out before war began. In total over 100 individuals volunteered to fight with the United States Army but only 19 made it back alive including seven members of the Greenough family who managed to escape captivity en route to Canada where they eventually settled down.[6][7][8][9] During Prohibition many businesses closed due to lack Of available revenue while others such as grocery stores did not face problems because customers could still buy items without buying alcohol; however several owners decided that prohibition should end so they stopped selling products beginning on January 1st 1920[10]. In 1933 following Will Rogers' visit to River Forrest he popularized this small enough town that he started hosting short films here called "The Andy Griffith Show".[11][12][13] This increased tourism which also led to more businesses opening up throughout society causing some decline during prohibition but overall growth continues today thanks largely to Interstate 90 running through town which has fostered job creation across various industries both big box store types such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart Inc., JCPenney Inc., Macy’s Incorporated etcetera along with smaller businesses within what used once were two downtown districts: Main Street South which includes most if not all large local retailers now facing displacement by new development located between I-90/US 50 Business District / dog park area west side - formerly known as “River Park” – north side currently known as “Olde Towne” although slowly gentrifying again – government property being majority residential housing units - old Masonic Temple having been converted into apartments since 1957 - largest business remaining within former downtown district is Sam Ash Cigars which opened up shop inside former Masonic Temple circa 1935 - dating back over 125 years
River Forest was a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,350 at the 2000 census. It was adjacent to the city of Bloomington. The community was founded by two brothers, George and Lorenzo Sturtevant, in 1857. They named it after the river that ran through it—the Big Blue River. The Sturtevant family operated a sawmill there until 1865. In 1876, they built a gristmill and a hotel on Main Street; the mill closed in 1924 but remained standing as a historical landmark until 1984 when it burned down. In 1957, River Forest became an incorporated municipality with its own government and school district; it lost its status as an unincorporated village in 1998 when Bloomington became its official city neighbor. The Sturtevant house still stands as a museum within the City of Bloomington Park complex which includes also the old post office building from 1857-1865 (now used for storage) and part of what was once their large barn/livery stable which still stands today
