The River Forest Arms and Ammunition Company was founded in 1892 in River Forest, Illinois. The company became a noted firearms manufacturer with its first pistols being shipped to the United States Navy in 1907. In 1916, the company's name was changed to Smith & Wesson Corporation and it gained international fame for its quality revolvers and other firearms products. In 1950, the company merged with Colt Firearms Company to form Colt-Chrysler Corporation. During the 1960s and 1970s, Colt-Chrysler Corporation produced some of America’s most famous handguns including the Walther PPK pistol and Glock pistols. However, by 1980, after years of financial struggles, Colt-Chrysler Corporation filed for bankruptcyage. This led to the sale of all assets of Colt-Chrysler Corporation to two private investors who renamed it American Pistol Corp. American Pistol Corp continued production of handguns under various new ownership until 1991 when it ceased operations completely due to economic reasons.

The River Forest Arsenal was a military installation located in River Forest, Illinois. The arsenal was built in 1859 and it served as the armory for the village of River Forest. The arsenal was closed in 1959 and it was demolished in 1961.
River Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It was founded in 1838 by John P. Winters and his family. The population of River Forest was 4,816 at the 2010 census. River Forest is located on the west bank of the Chicago River. The village was chartered in 1838 and originally named for Anna Lorette, daughter of French explorer Jean-Baptiste Lorette. In 1847, it changed its name to Prairie du Chien after General James K. Polk's victory over Mexico at the Battle of Buena Vista that year. The current name comes from a parcel of land that once extended across the river to what is now Milwaukee Avenue and Old Orchard Road. River Forest became a shopping center when it opened in 1957 adjacent to Sears Tower on State Street between Decatur Boulevard and Western Avenue. At that time, it contained 100 stores including 20 Sears departments and 100 JCPenney stores as well as six movie theaters and two bowling alleys. In 1984, Sears sold its remaining holdings in River Forest to Pillsbury Brands North America for $880 million . That same year saw the opening of Sears' last store within River Forest: A location called "Old World" on Wabash Avenue just east of State Street which closed in early 2011 after over 50 years in business . The Village also lost one major thoroughfare—State Street—when right-of-way for I-94 was diverted around it during construction of Interstate 294 (now Midtown Crossing). In 2007, all but one store inside River Forest were purchased by Kmart Corporation; however, Kmart has since vacated most sites within the community with plans to redevelopment them into housing or commercial spaces The first settlers who arrived here were John Pwinters’ parents who came from England with their four children around 1830s looking for new land to live on following the Great American Famine which hit Ireland particularly hard due to importation limits placed upon British goods exported there during that time period

River Forest is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. River Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the east side of Lake Michigan, just north of Chicago's downtown and to the east of Midway Airport. The Village of River Forest was organized on October 14, 1871 by vote of the town board. The name honors John H. river (1836-1910), an early settler and trustee for the village who also donated land for its erection. On April 3, 1907, River Forest became an incorporated village with a charter from Mayoralty President James J. Doyle as "theVillage of River Forest." In 1957, all but one block in River Forest were destroyed by a fire that started in a grocery store next door; due to this event and other fires that have occurred over the years it has been called "the Ghost Town" because no new housing has been built since 1959 despite attempts by developers to do so. The River Forest community is located in the northern suburb of Evanston, Illinois. The community was founded on November 3, 1906 by a group of investors who named it after their tree-lined streets and park. The name "River Forest" originated from the fact that there were several rivers near the community. In 1907, the first school in River Forest was built on what is now North Avenue. In 1916, a library was also built in River Forest. In 1925, a football stadium was built and called Glen Park Stadium. It served as home to the Evanston Panthers (now Northwestern University) football team until 1957 when they moved to Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. In 1950, a shopping center called Civic Center opened in River Forest. It contained a movie theater, department store, restaurant, and other businesses. In 1998, an expressway called I-90 was constructed through River Forest and Glen Park Stadium became part of the highway system. In 2001 an indoor arena called United Center opened in River Forest which hosted various concerts and events over the years such as basketball games between Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers etc..It later closed down due to financial difficulties in 2009 however it has been mentioned online again recently as potential development for river forest according to real estate developers
