River Forest, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of the state of Illinois. The population was 5,491 as of the 2010 census. River Forest has a long and rich history dating back to 1819 when it was part of Vandalia Township. It is now a bedroom community for the larger city of Chicago and its many suburbs. The name "River Forest" comes from two different places; one meaning “a deep ravine” and another meaning “forested valley”. At first, these two names were used interchangeably but soon realized that “river” referred to the natural body of water which flowed through the town while “forests” surrounded it on all sides. In fact, even though River Forest was founded by English colonists in 1819, much evidence indicates that trees had been growing here since pre-historic times. During World War II, however, tree-cutting operations began in earnest and by 1945 most of the old growth had been cleared away leaving only a minimal forest remaining on either side of I-90. Today, riverfront property remains an important source of revenue for River Forest while also providing residents with access to scenic views both southward towards downtown Chicago and eastward towards Mount Prospect Park (the largest public park in Cook County). Although some retail development has taken place along I-90 since post-war years (most notably Target), much focus still lies on residential zoning which allows for many single family homes as well as multifamily dwellings (although this number is slowly changing). Despite recent setbacks (namely from Hurricane Sandy), River Forrest remains an important manufacturing center for north suburban Cook County - especially those companies involved with plastics and other production processes outdoors or near waterways including rivers like../Plymouth Rock Creek/.

River Forest, Ill. is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1855 by John and Anna Ladd as the nucleus of what would become River Forest Township. The community grew quickly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its good soil. By 1870, River Forest had a population of 350 people and was incorporated as a village. In 1865, the Chicago & Quincy Railroad extended from Chicago through rural Kane County and began passenger service to River Forest; this led to growth in the village because passengers could now travel easily between Chicago and River Forest. The railroad also brought new businesses and families to River Forest; these newcomers helped keep the community growing until it reached its current size. In 1912, when Kane County merged with DuPage County, River Forrest became part of that county as well. Today, there are still a few small businesses based in River Forrest; however, most residents live in Kane County or DuPage County. They named their settlement after one of their favorite places abroad-the forested region along the French Riviera known for its white sand beaches (Ferguson). These villages served as support systems for each other during times of war or famine-a common occurrence during those days across much of North Americadue to lack of food resources (Goudreau). One such village was established at present dayRiver Forest after Captain Joseph Hennepin's party discovered navigable watercourse nearby in 1847.(Ferguson) This discovery connected much needed trade routes between Great Lakes ports like Milwaukee and St Louis along with furthering Henry Morris' plan for a canal from Lake Michigan to Cairo(Dixon). Thanks largely to Captain Hennepin’s discovery Steamboat Navigation Company started shipping goods downriver from DeKalb IL which cutting off transportation costs for farmers east coast cities like New York City which depended heavily on lake freighters sailing up and down lake Michigan every week(Ferguson)." The River Forest neighborhood of Chicago was once a heavily forested area. The trees that remain today are remnants of what was once an extensive and well-maintained forest. The neighborhood is bounded by the Kedzie Avenue corridor to the north, State Street to the east, Randolph Street to the south, and Clybourn Avenue to the west. In 1871, Illinois Legislature mandated that all parishes within Cook County must have a park or open space in their territory. Cook County's first park was located in River Forest on North Side near Kedzie Avenue. The park served as a community center for residents of the area until it merged with Grant Park in 1912. Today, River Forest is home to several businesses and restaurants including Bob Evans restaurant and Urban Outfitters store.
