River Forest, Illinois is located in the far southeastern corner of the United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of River Forest was 9,895. It is a small town situated on a bend in the river that forms part of the border between Cook County and DuPage County. The river has been a source of water for mills and homes for centuries, making it an important economic center for Estes Park and northwest Kane County. The first Europeans to visit River Forest were French traders operating out of Fort Dearborn on the north side of the river in 1679-1680. They named their settlement “Châteauguay” after François Chastelain, Marquis de Lafayette’s aide-de-camp who had accompanied him during his military campaigns in Europe. The first permanent settler arrived in 1784 when David Herter bought land from Nicholas Teague at what is now Old Mill Road. soon afterwards other settlers began arriving, including Ebenezer Mudge who built a gristmill on what is now Main Street in 1786. The early years of River Forest were difficult becauseof its location at an strategic crossroads surrounded by hostile Indian Territory settlements with which it had no connection whatsoever. However, over time this obstacle slowly disappeared asriver transportation improved and trade dried up due to hostility among various Native American groups

This system consisted of three parts: an armrest (mounted on top of your rifle), an eyepiece (installed onto one endofthe armrest), and a screwdriver handle (mounted belowthe eyepiece). In 1916, river forest became home to the world’s largest hat factory when Marshall Field opened his plant there. In 1954, river forest became home to Sears Roebuck & Company which would be responsible for creating one of America’s most successful retail chains. Over the years Sears has made many transformations including closing stores in China and opening up shop outside of Chicago; however their roots remain here at river forest with some stores still open today (e.g Kmart).

The area now includes parts of the city of Chicago and the towns of La Grange, Crystal City, and Willowbrook. The first European to visit the River Forest region was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1495. The region became a part of the French colony of Louisiana in 1699. In 1815, the United States acquired what is now Illinois from France as part of the Treaty of Paris following its War for Independence. The land that would become River Forest was purchased by George Stephenson, an engineer who founded Stephenson's Manufacturing Company in 1818. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many industries were located in River Forest including textiles, aluminum production, automotive manufacturing, and sugar cane farming. In 1907, River Forest voters passed a referendum approving annexation by Chicagoland which created what is today Chicago’s largest city park (River Park).
