River Forest experienced another boom period during World War II because it was one of few areas in America where munitions production could take place safely without fear of enemy retaliation. This growth led to increased development around the area; some new neighborhoods were created while others were abandoned after heavy bombing raids raidages during World War II destroyed most of downtown Chicago). One result of all this activity was that much older neighborhood streets have been replaced with widened highways or expressways which have made it difficult for residents to walk their children or grandchildren around their properties anymore!
