River Forest is located on the south bank of the Chicago River and its namesake creek, which runs through it. Wigglesworth quickly proved himself an effective educator and started building schools throughout Illinois using his own money – something that would not be done again until after World War II! River Forest is a town in Winnebago County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. River Forest was platted on February 14, 1871, by J.W. Hennigan and Wm. Ladd as a part of the Town of New Madrid. The name comes from the Ottawa River which flows through the town. The first settler in River Forest was John & Nancy Miller who arrived in 1872. They were followed by their two children and four others that year. The next year they had six people living in the community. In 1875 they had ten people and by 1880 they had sixteen residents including five women and eleven children. In 1881 the first school opened in River Forest with twenty-six students attending grades one to twelve according to Drury's Atlas of Winnebago County (1878). That same year also saw the construction of a church on Elm Street for $1,200 with Reverend James Healy officiating at its dedication.. In 1886 a new post office was built with JF Postmaster serving until 1971 when it became part of Terre HauteMail . In 1895 a small dam was constructed north of town on what is now Slinger Road for irrigation purposes adding to village growth however no permanent water source could be found until 1908 when an underground well finally supplying water to River Forest became available In 1909 work began on building a two block long public library complex named after Mrs Fenton who donated her land and funds for its construction . It opened its doors on October 5th 1912 at 501 E Washington Ave becoming one of only twelve public libraries statewide then . On July 1st 1925 all schools within Winnebago County closed due to budget cuts however River Forest continued operating under charter until 1975 when it merged with other towns within Winnebago County forming Northwestern Illinois Township
