In 1814, John Jacob Astor founded the American Fur Company here and began trading fur with the Native Americans in this region. After America's victory over France at Yorktown, Spain ceded their holdings around Lake Michigan to America as part of that treaty. This gave American traders access to vast amounts of fur from Asia and Europe, which led to an increase in demand for raw furs from these regions. In 1817, Isaac Brock discovered gold near Rockford and began mining here for gold prospectors; early river Ford mines yielded about $5 per ton compared to $30 per ton today when alluvial gold is found nearby. By 1825, over 100 men had worked at these mines; by 1830 only 10 men remained working there due to competition from new sources of ore discovered along the industry’s expansion into Canada and Mexico
