River Forest is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. River Forest was founded in 1871 by George Ransom and his brother-in-law C. H. Swan as a farming community on the edge of the woods near Stone Lake. The name "River Forest" was chosen because of its proximity to the Des Plaines River which flowed through the town and drained into Lake Michigan; this made for easy access to grain and other agricultural products from miles around. The first village in what is now River Forest was called West Point because it had been surveyed by Captain John Pike in 1795 for Major General Dearborn as part of his survey of all Western Indiana Territory. When Dearborn moved westwardly in 1817, he took with him some of his men and their families who built West Point on land that had once been part of Cahokia Indian Nation holdings east of Kankakee Creek; this move increased commercial activity in what became River Forest because goods available only from eastern Illinois were now available further west and more cheaply than they could be brought back home. In 1871, George Ransom purchased 8½ acres (3 km²) northeast of Stone Lake from James McNamara for $2 per acre ($27 per hectare). This purchase set off a series of purchases that would result in River Forest becoming one of the most extensively developed communities within Cook County – indeed, it soon outgrew its original site by 10%. By 1888, when riverfront property sales reached $1 million (equivalent to $105 million today), River Forrest had become an almost self-sufficient community with electricity: all households received power either directly or via an wires extending throughout much of downtown; streets were laid out according to straight lines rather than curves so water runoff could be lessened; schools were built; businesses sprang up; residents decorated their homes with imported plants such as palms and azaleas – many still do so today! Today's riverfront setting has given way to larger shopping malls but few residences remain typical farmsteads orchards surrounded by lush gardens capable provide year round production including flowers, fruits & vegetables etc.. River Forest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. River Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The area now known as River Forest was first settled by Quakers in 1795. In 1812, the village of Dundee was established on the east side of the Chicago River, and it was annexed by River Forest in 1838. In 1847, the north side of the river was annexed by what is now Oak Park and River Forest became a separate municipality on that side of the river. In 1912, when parts of Cook County were divided along racial lines into black and white districts for voting purposes, River Forest residents voted to become their own city. On October 20th of that year, they held an election to make their own mayor and City Council members; this vote gave rise to one of Chicago's most famous nicknames - "The Jungle". The name stuck because only white people could vote in those days (the first African American voter in Cook County had been registered in 1917). Many other nicknames have been given toRiver Forest over time including: "The Cotton Belt", "The Ghetto", "Downtown Dallas with a Greenbelt", and simply "RFK". Today's riverside community contains some impressive architecture dating back to its early years as a settlement - such as Elmhurst Station #1 which served as both a hospital and post office from 1836-1857; or Christmastime gift shop located on State Street between Addison Avenue and Park Avenue during World War II; or Stroudsburg Hospital built in 1907 which has been home to various medical institutions including Rush University Medical School since 1961 (and currently Rush Cancer Center). There are also many small businesses located along Rufus Road/State Street - such as Jamba Juice on State Street near Elk Grove Village Boulevard; Bojangles' chicken shack on State Street across from IKEA; or ABC News store at 116 N Halsted Street just west of KFC restaurant! What makes River Forrest so unique is not just its history but also its continued growth today - which can be seen through its diverse cultural venues such as theaters, music halls and art galleries – all within walking distance from each other! One example is Live Nation's 360° theater complex located adjacent to Wrigley Field – just minutes away from downtown Chicago! In 1819, the first white men set foot in what is now River Forest. A group of farmers led by John Stephenson founded a small town on the banks of the river. The town was named after a nearby forest, which they thought would provide cover from Native Americans who might be raiding their crops. The new settlers were happy to find a safe place to live and start their own businesses. They built homes and stores along the main street and began to build churches and schools. The town grew quickly, and in 1838, it became a city. River Forest soon became one of the most important cities in Illinois because of its location near the river and its many businesses.
