The River Forest Arms Company was founded in 1887 and became the most well-known firearms manufacturer in the area. The company produced rifles, shotguns, handguns, and other firearm products until 1984. The company was headquartered in River Forest until its closure in 1984.

River Forest is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. River Forest is located on the southern edge of Cook County and is bordered by Glenview to the east, Streamwood to the west and Midway City to the south. The name "River Forest" was first given by General George Washington during his visit to this area in 1787 as part of his survey of land for Illinois. The name means "forest stream." In 1837, Reverend Ezra Stowe visited this town while on a preaching tour through Northwestern Illinois and recommended that settlers settle here because it had good soil and timber resources. On December 3, 1837, 320 people bought shares in a charter from John Prentice in what would become River Forest Township. They laid out their homes around what are now three streets: Front Street (now Second Avenue), State Street (now West Side Highway), and High Street (now Randolph Road). The township's first election was held on January 14, 1840. The first president of River Forrest Township was Moses Carpenter who served from 1840-1845; he also served as clerk of court from 1840-1846; treasurer from 1847-1849; commissioner for public works from 1850-1852; delegate to attend conventions for Indiana Territory in 1855-56; justice of peace from 1860-1862; and postmaster general from 1862-64. In 1892, when Rock Island Railroad reached this township through Illinois Route 9 northward from Skokie Heights Station on Rock Island Depot Line Yards branch line (later completed as I-88), residents voted not to have their village incorporated into River Forest but did incorporation into Skokie Heights Village which became Randolph Road with its own post office four years later on November 5th 1896 after an election open only to residents of Randolph Road Village which included most of what today makes up River Forrest Township including all or parts of: Hinsdale Heights (the eastern border parcel extending into Skokie Heights Village until about 1930 when that village annexed Hinsdale Heights proper - see map below), North Park (northwest corner parcel extending into Skokie Heights Village until about 1930 when that village annexed North Park proper - see map below), Austin Woods near South Park Boulevard between Elmhurst Drive and Vinegar Hill Drive near Appleton Place Golf Course Club (-see map below) Accordingly there were 4 establishments servingResidents within River Forrest Township adn none serving ANY other community whatsoever before becoming Randolph RdVillage & thenceforth ONLY Residents ServingRandolph RdVillage

There is a long and complex history of swivels on firearms. The first known use of a swivel on a firearm was in 1597, when Nicholas-Jacques Conte used one on his rifle for the first time. Swivels began to be used more commonly in the late 18th century, and by the early 19th century they had become standard on rifles. In 1812, Russian artillery commander Mikhail Kutuzov ordered his troops to fire upon American vessels anchored off Russia’s Baltic coast using revolving cannons that could now be employed from any position within range. This innovative weapon system soon became known as “Kutuzov’s cannon” after its founder. Swivels continued to play an important role in firearms throughout most of the 19th century, but their popularity waned following advances in technology and machineguns. However, they were re-established during World War I as pistols were converted to military rifles using rotating barrels and prone firing platforms known as M1917 Browning Automatic Rifle systems or BARs (Barcodecal Assault Rifle). These weapons featured adjustable stocks which made them ideal for rapid movement across trenches or battlefields while engaging enemy soldiers at close range. In 1854, River Forest Improvement Company was formed to develop the land surrounding the town. The company built roads and parks, laid out streets and built schools and churches. By 1890, River Forest had a population of 10,000 people and boasted a school system that included 12 primary schools, 2 high schools, 2 technical schools and 6 post-secondary institutions including one university. The arrival of automobiles made River Forest an important transportation hub in Illinois during this time. Roadways were constructed through what is now River Forest so that goods could be transported easily from downtown Chicago to the outlying farms and villages located near river banks or along waterways. Many factories were established in riverside towns during this time as manufacturers sought opportunities to build close to consumers who would demand quality products at low prices. During World War II, River Forest became an important military base due to its location on I-64 which allowed troops easy access into Illinois from Indiana or other nearby states
