River Forest is an agricultural and suburban community in the northwest Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the city of Chicago to the east, Midland Township to the north, Will County to the west, and Lake Michigan to the south. The community was founded in 1881 as a small farming village on a bend in the Fox River. It grew rapidly during World War II as munitions production increased in nearby Willowbrook Arsenal; by 1965, River Forest had outgrown its original villagesite and annexed adjacent properties. Today, it has a population of over 4300 residents and covers an area of 27 square miles (79 square kilometers). The community's name comes from two forks of the Fox River: one fork runs through downtown while another flows through Park Ridge, concurrent with I-55. The old river namesakes were John Kilmer (meaning "a bend in the stream") and his wife Sarah (meaning "the meadow"), after whom Kilmer Road was named. In 1881, when Chicago became a consolidated city, Kilmer saw opportunity for development at what would become River Forest because of its proximity to Soldier Field and other transportation hubs. He purchased land on both forks of the river for $2 per acre ($40 per hectare), making him one of the first developers in town. By 1865, he had developed more than fifty homes including four schools and five businesses along Kildeer Drive between Elmhurst Avenue and Worth Avenue – this area later became known asRiverforest Shopping Center). In 1966, City Planning Commissioner Jerome Adams approved plans for what would become River Forest that called for an expansion of Windy City Mall into what is now Meadow Brook shopping center adjacent to Interstate 55 between State Street/Lake Shore Drive/Parrish Parkway/Worth Avenue River Forest officially became a city on April 1st 1984 with over 3000 residents On July 1st 1986 Park Ridge annexed neighboring property which created an even larger neighborhood with over 4000 residents

River Forest is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "River Forest" originated from the Muddy River which flows through it. The U.S. Census Bureau has identified six sources for this name: (1) Reverend James Caldwell's family farm on North Avenue in 1848; (2) a post office called "Forest" opened in 1892; (3) a school called "Forest School" organized by Mrs. Alvira McIntosh in 1904; (4) an agricultural company known as the United States Rubber Company built a bridge over the Muddy River near present day River Forest Road and Superior Boulevard in 1912; and (5) a private landowner named Forrest Haldeman acquired title to most of what is now River Forest in 1925. According to the 2010 census, 9,869 people live within 5 miles of downtown Chicago proper – more than any other community within that radius – while 2,381 people reside within 10 miles of downtown Chicago proper including 1,237 inside City Hall boundaries itself. Additionally, 2,446 residents live within 15 miles of downtown Chicago proper with 884 located inside City Hall boundaries themselves making it one of largest clusters of Midwesterners living close to city center outside Milwaukee and Omaha respectively. With respect to race/ethnicity mix however, only Whites make up majority group here with African Americans constituting less than 10%of total population according to 2000 US Census data while Hispanics/ Latinos comprise almost 30%of total population here according to that same survey taken five years later according to2010 American Community Survey figures released last week by the US Census Bureau). This concentration of white residents around large central business districts may be explained as much by economic factors as anything else but it also coincides with some long-standing demographic trends seen throughout Chicagoland such as increasing Latino migration into cities and their children having shorter childhood spans due bothtoBaby Boomer retirements and increased women working outside the home after gaining legal rights during Reconstruction periodicals like "The Economist" have noted increasinglyelite Baby Boomers increasinglycentering their social lives around professional events like business meetings or political rallies rather then staying put at home with their families during traditional holidays like Christmas
