Today, River Forest is known for its wide range of cultural experiences - from art appreciation classes offered by art museums nearby to international festivals held each year at various venues within town limits.

The population in 1850 was 3,564; by 1880 it had grown to 12,890. In 1892, Kane County merged with DuPage County to form a unified state government. In 1997, State Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced Senate Bill 5 which would have repealed all anti-discrimination laws in Illinois statewide; this bill failed to receive a single vote in either house before it expired on January 1st, 1998.
