River Forest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 22,868 at the 2010 census. River Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit the area were missionaries from France in 1818. Jesuit Father Gabriel de Lattre founded a mission on the banks of the Fox River in what is now River Forest. Lattre named this settlement after St. Francis Xavier, who had visited America in 1534 and given religious teachings there that spread throughout Europe. In 1825, John A. Foster purchased land adjacent to Lattre's mission and started an agricultural community called Fosterville with fifty-four families. In 1827, he sold his interest in Fosterville to Moses Weingarten for $5,000 cash and started the city of River Forest as its first settler. Weingarten named his new village after Saint Joseph (the patron saint of agriculture). The city's first mayor was Solomon Ralston (1829-30). In 1830, Abraham Lincoln moved from Springfield to River Forest and began working as a carpenter on a farmstead owned by Reuben Goldthwait near present day Roosevelt Road and State Street. Lincoln became interested in politics and decided to run for office when he heard about the upcoming election from one of his neighbors, John Capps Sr.. He won election as a Democrat to the Illinois General Assembly in 1835 but lost reelection bids two years later due to term limits set by then-Governor James Kappeler II.. In 1840 Lincoln again ran for office when he learned that Kappeler had become governor because no one else wanted the job because it would have meant admitting defeat at home while also facing potential suitors abroad...Lincoln won reelection as an American Republican against three opponents including future Ulysses S. Grant who unsuccessfully challenged him at next year's presidential election campaign He served two terms as president before being impeached by President James Kappeler III on May 20th, 1851 for "treason" involving obstruction of justice during his administration - which ultimately led to his firing from office on August 14th following conviction by 9 out 16 members of Congress including future Ulysses S., Grant who took over until Lincoln was pardoned on October 6th Grant eventually became President Ulysses S., Grant's Sr., making him grandfatherly figure not only within Washington D C but also outside it Grant returned home permanently in 1865 after spending time living among Native Americans at Mound City Indian Reservation where he negotiated their removal from Iowa Territory - which they did on February 14th Grounds near TopekaKansas under international law - becoming one of few American Presidents ever able to do so After leaving office following four terms spent mostly residing with Indians off reservation he died aged 87 years old at bedside surrounded by family early Sunday morning 3/15/1911 at Mound City Indian Reservation having outlasted more than any other living AmericanPresident up until then

River Forest also has a rich history that goes back to when it was first settled. In 1819, three Polish brothers named Jakub, Wincenty and Wojciech started farming what is now River Forest. They named their farm after the forest near Krakow where they had been living for some time. The brothers got help from their engineer father to build some roads and bridges so they could get products to market more efficiently. By 1830, River Forest had two churches (one Lutheran, one Methodist), six schools (including one for girls), twelve shops/stores/ banks/ warehouses, four homes (six of which were currently still standing), four barns/outbuildings including one that still stands today as a museumpiece, six cows and two calves, fourteen pigs, eighteen chickens and five dogs all born at the farmstead between 1819-1830! As things turned out this community would continue growing throughout the years with new arrivals coming here such as Germans (mostly men) who worked on farms nearby or Poles who came through on stagecoaches from Krakow every Saturday night! One such resident was Teofilo Frankiewicz who moved to River Forest in 1850 from his native Poland just north of Chicago! He would go on to become one of America’s most famous authors writing such works as “The Great Gatsby” and “The Catcher in the Rye” among others! However even with all these expansions there were always people looking for something more: an escape from everyday life; an opportunity for fun and relaxation; someone who could share news of their home town with them during these difficult times! So despite all these positive changes going on around them residents never forgot how much they loved their hometown: their friends; their family; their traditions - everything that made River Forest special! And this love continued into the future as well: when word spread about plans by Area Vocational Technical School (AVTS) to move its headquarters away from Englewood Township but keep its classes here locals rallied together to save AVTS from being forced out – A victory that helped spur growth within River Forest over subsequent decades!

The River Forest area was laid out in 1834 by John H. Richardson, a surveyor for the Illinois Central Railroad. The settlement was named for the large forested area to the southwest of it, which had been part of the original grant of land to Pierre Laclède and other French explorers in 1763. By 1847, over 1,500 families were living in River Forest, most of them farmers. The village was incorporated as a town in 1857 and then as a city in 1907. In 1941, River Forest became an agricultural center with many small farms surrounded by dense forests; however, manufacturing and services have grown increasingly important since then.
