Gun barrels have a long and varied history in River Forest, Illinois. From the early days of revolvers to the modern sporting rifle, gun barrels have been an important part of the local community. The first firearms in River Forest were pistols and rifles made by pioneer Joel Palmer. In 1838, Palmer built a small arsenal on his land near what is now South Park Boulevard and Chicago Avenue. The arsenal was used primarily for target shooting and produced weapons such as shotguns and handguns. During the 1840s, several other settlers began manufacturing their own firearms in River Forest. These pioneers included John Fenton and George Henniker. Fenton manufactured revolvers, shotguns, rifles, bayonets, crossbows, swords and more. He also helped found the village of River Forest in 1846. In 1857, Major John Sibley purchased Palmer's assets including the Arsenal property. Sibley soon started manufacturing guns using his new factory space. His products included pistols (such as the famous Black Hawk), rifles (including the Model 1851), shotguns (such as the Model 1861) and pistols again (the Model 1860). Sibley's company is considered to be one of River Forest's earliest firearms businesses. Throughout its history, River Forest has had a strong gun industry tradition. Today, many of our favorite firearms are made here in Ranford Township – from hunting rifles to .22 caliber handguns!

The first guns in River Forest, Illinois were acquired by the settlers in the early 1800s. The first pistols and rifles were made of lead or wood and used for hunting and protection. By 1847, small arms had become a common part of society in the area, with cannons being acquired to protect plantations from Native Americans. In 1854, the first organized militia was formed in River Forest, and soon began using firearms to defend against Indian attacks. In 1865, River Forest became a city after it was incorporated as a village. The city passed an ordinance that allowed citizens to own handguns and shotguns without having to obtain a license. In 1889, the City Council passed an ordinance that banned all handguns except those registered with the police department. During World War II, River Forest served as one of five villages within Illinois that supplied munitions for the war effort. After the war ended in 1945, many of the weapons that had been used during World War II were donated or given away to other municipalities throughout Illinois. Today, River Forest still has some of its original weaponry including handguns and shotguns dating back to 1848
River Forest is a small town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. River Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by the Will County line to the east and north, Lake Michigan to the west, and DuPage County to the south. The name "River Forest" comes from two sources: one gives its name to a creek that cuts through the town, and another source says that when a man named Forrest saw a beautiful valley with forest on either side he called it "River's Grove." The community was founded in 1892 by men who were looking for land for farming purposes. River Forest became an incorporated city in 1899. Today, River Forest has a large shopping center as well as several parks which include Regency Park, Willowbrook Park, and Liberty Woods Park. It also has several restaurants including Granny Smith's Apple Pie Pizza and Indianola Coffee House which serve breakfast and lunch respectively. In addition to these businesses there are also several churches which serve different denominations within River Forest's population including First Baptist Church (founded in 1893), St John's Episcopal Church (founded in 1902), Trinity United Methodist Church (founded in 1907), Evangelical Lutheran church (founded 1905), Catholic church (established 1908), Adventist church (1893) and Presbyterian church (1901). There are also many duplexes built throughout town during the early years of development so that people could get away from city life for awhile. These days there are few if any Duplexes left remaining but many single-family homes as well as some apartments have been constructed since then around town or near Highway 90W known locally as 'The Loop'.

River Forest was founded in 1881 by the Reverend John S. Goodrich and his wife, Sarah. The Goodrich family had been living in River Forest for many years and had developed a small farm there. Reverend Goodrich believed that education should be available to all children, so he started a school in River Forest and soon enough, other families followed suit. By 1907, River Forest had become one of the most important towns in northwest Illinois. It was also one of the first places in the United States to have electric lights. The town quickly became known for its dramatic setting - on a bend in the Chicago River lay an ancient forest which inspired artists and writers such as Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau to write about their experiences there. The river was also an important factor in River Forest's growth; because it allowed people to get close to nature without having to go far, it helped make life more affordable for residents. In addition to its natural features,River Forrest also boast some of the finest architecture from early American times. Many of the buildings still stand today - including parts of the Common Council building (now part of Northwestern University), Riverside Church (once home to Abraham Lincoln), and several houses belonging to Mrs. Moses Levy (the mother of Rabbi Leo Youngman). In recent years,river forest has seen an influx of new residents - many of whom are related to those who lived here during earlier periods of its history. These newcomers have brought with them their own memories and stories about what made River Forest so special back then- something that is still sorely missing today
The River Forest area was originally a part of the Potawatomi Nation. The first European to visit the area was French trader and explorer Jacques Marquette in 1679. Marquette named the area for his friend, Samuel de Champlain, who had explored and mapped the region before him. In 1812, General James K. Polk discovered oil deposits in what is now Illinois and sent exploration parties into the area. By 1827, over 120 miles of pipeline had been built to carry oil from Texas to Chicago. The town of Elmwood Springs was founded in 1827 by settlers who camped along the banks of the Mississippi River. The town rapidly grew and soon became one of Illinois' largest towns with a population of around 10,000 people by 1830. By 1860, Elmwood Springs had become one of Illinois' most important cities with a population of over 30,000 people
