River Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,879 at the 2010 census. River Forest is located on the right bank of the Cogswell River. It is bordered by Aurora to the north and west, the village of Geneva to the east and south, and Carbondale to the southeast. In 1847, Andrew Jenson founded a gristmill on what is now Main Street in River Forest; he also built a Methodist church and other buildings. In 1866–67, James Hennepin organized a wagon road from Carbondale to Chicago; this led tothe settlement of River Forest near what is now West Elmhurst Avenue. The town’s first post office was established in 1870; it changed its name to River Forest in 1886 due to confusion with another nearby community that same year. The first school opened in 1872; it became an elementary school until 1967 when it merged with Geneva Township School District #1 (later Carbondale Township School District). River Forest is a city in Dixon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,852 at the 2010 census. River Forest is located on the village of River Forest and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town began as a farming community by Dutch farmers in 1795. It was named for General James Robertson Wood who had fought in the American Revolution and became a hero after leading an attack on British forces at Fort Dearborn. In 1814, Amasa Blyth founded what would become River Forest as one of his many townships in Dixon County. The first post office was established here in 1828. By 1848, most of the town had been destroyed by fire; however, it was soon rebuilt and renamed River Forest again following its incorporation as a city on December 14, 1868. The growth of River Forest was spurred by several factors including its location within easy reach ofChicago via railroads, its sizable manufacturing sector which produced goods such as flour, soapstone tiles and cigars (the latter being popular with Chicagoans during their annual cigar cruise), and its large number of residents who desired to live close to jobs and businesses but also enjoy open space within walking distance or driving distance to all types of activities available in Chicago proper (such as shopping at Sears & Roebuck or getting your hands on new clothes at Marshall Field's). Although some portions were developed more rapidly than others – such as North Avenue which opened up near downtown in 1915 – overall river forest grew steadily until reaching its peak development around 1960-1962 when Interstate 90 cut through the heart of the town center creating an ever-widening buffer between river forest and downtown Chicago – effectively cutting off much needed residential development from what could have been enjoyed by both groups should they not have been drastically slowed down by traffic congestion caused primarily by motorists coming from southbound I-90 rather than northbound I-95A/B drivers coming into town from outlying areas like Rockford or Joliet Heights. Although today there are still some pockets (such as West Side Shopping Center) where river forest appears largely undisturbed due to slowdowns that can only be experienced during very low volumes; nevertheless it is generally safe to walk or drive through these areas without fear that you willrun into any longablished residents or historic items dating back to earlier times
