The Village of River Forest annexed adjacent villages of Grayslake and West Englewood in 1964-1965 as part of larger community development plans following cityhood within Cook County which had been proposed by then-mayor Richard Moseley and approved by county board members On July 1st 1968, when Grayslake withdrew its incorporation into River ForrestVillage while West Englewood did not follow suit, both villages were combined into one municipality with an equal population count (3,971) . On November 6th 1978 voters passed a referendum that created township status for all three villages under terms set forth in Township Act No 5578 . As such citizens of either village could only vote for trustees for their respective townships not for themselves as residents or municipal officers

River Forest is a small community in the heart of Illinois, located about 25 miles south of Chicago. The village was founded in 1836 by George Washington Carleton. It derives its name from the river that bisects it, the Chicago River. At its peak in the 1920s, River Forest had a population of 1,200 people and was an important agricultural center for southern Illinois. However, after World War II, gradual replacement of jobs by suburbanites and other economic changes caused the decline of River Forest and other small villages throughout the state. Today, only a few hundred residents remain in River Forest and most of its buildings date back to the early 1800s. The village of River Forest was founded on April 15th 1836 by George Washington Carleton as part of a larger settlement called Clintonville which he proposed to survey along what is now State Route 12 (now I-290). In his original proposal to Congress, Carleton identified three streams which would join form one large river: “the North Branch or Des Plaines”; “the South Branch or Jackson”; and “the West Branch or Fox Lake”. On July 16th 1836, Carleton submitted his plat for what is now known as River Forest Village (now part of Wheeling). He named this new community after himself – after both his home state (Illinois) and his wife (Fanny Wright), both natives of Pennsylvania. The first post office in River Forest opened on November 8th 1837. At first glance it may seem strange that such an isolated community could support such a large population given its distance from major commercial centers like Chicago but this was common during America's mid-19th century growth period where towns & villages sprang up all over Iowa & Minnesota due to improved transportation & communication technologies which made goods more accessible & affordable than ever before. Additionally, many rural families were still able to derive their livelihoods from agriculture despite technological advancements which meant they could continue producing food even while living far away from marketplaces/agricultural hubs like Chicago proper – something which urbanites were not able to achieve until much later in our history! In 1840 Washburn County acquired 4500 acres northward including present day River Forest Village from George Washington Carleton for $5 per acre….. This land included much older Indian burial grounds dating back centuries!! As Washburn County grew richer through fur trading with Canada (& Mexico), more area became available for development including farmland near present day Wheeling OH….. By 1850 there were over 100 homes built within what is nowRiver Forrest Village….In spite of these positive developments however………………….same problems persisted thru outriver parts until at least 1870 when white settlers began moving into areas east & west OF present day Riverside HeightsMI………………..This rapid expansion led directly to increased violence between Native Americans (& settlers) leading eventually TO US MILITARY INVASION OF INDIAN LAND IN 1865!!!!! A map published circa 1860 shows some resemblance between current day Riverside Heights Summit neighborhood on south side AND old townsite near current site Of RIVER FOREST VILLAGE.......However nothing remained exactly same until today….. So lets take another look at some key points…………………………………… 1)River Forrest Village originated around 1836 as part of George Washington Carleton's Clintonville Settlement proposal 2) By 1840 Washburn County had acquired 4500 acres northward including present day River forest Village 3) Between 1865-1870 numerous violent incidents took place between Native Americans (& settlers) leading ultimately TO US MILITARY INVASION OF INDIAN LAND

The River Forest area was first settled in the mid-19th century. The area was originally part of the town of Danville, Illinois. In 1847, the town of Danville was merged with neighboring village of Lockport to form the new city of Chicago. The River Forest area remained part of Chicago until it was annexed by Jefferson County, Illinois in 1868. In 1925, Chicago replaced Jefferson County as the county seat and the River Forest area became part of the new city of Wheeling.
